Man arrested after leading authorities on high speed chase in stolen pickup

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 21-year-old male following a high speed pursuit Tuesday.

Meade County Chief Deputy Sheriff James Johns says at approximately 12:30 AM on February 11, 2025, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office received word of a reported stolen 2011 Ford F-150, which had been taken from the Summerset area. The vehicle was last seen headed westbound on the interstate.

Deputies quickly spotted the silver F-150 on Elk Creek Road near Sun Valley, and a pursuit ensued.

Johns says speeds reached 70 miles per hour during the pursuit as the suspect headed toward Box Elder.

Box Elder Police were alerted and deployed mechanical tire deflators that successfully flattened two of the vehicle’s tires. However, Johns says the suspect continued with two downed tires, heading south toward Hwy 14/16, and making his way to Rapid City, entering I-90 westbound.

Near mile marker 63, a Rapid City Police Officer got in position and deployed another set of tire deflators. Johns says this time, the suspect had no choice but to bring the vehicle to a stop near Exit 61, where he surrendered peacefully to law enforcement. Two passengers in the stolen vehicle were interviewed and released without charges.

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Anthony Runningshield. He was arrested and charged with aggravated eluding, Possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and stop sign violation,
