RAPID CITY, S.D. — A large wildfire in Wyoming, the Red Canyon Fire, continues to burn at more than 50,000 acres, according to reports from the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Land Management. The fire, which is 0% contained, has prompted an immediate evacuation order for some residents in Hot Springs County, Wyoming.
The fire is located south of Black Mountain Road and west of Kirby Creek Road, moving northeast. The Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Office has advised those in the area to evacuate immediately, though the fire is not currently approaching Thermopolis. An evacuation center has been established at the Thermopolis Fire Hall at 400 S 14th St.
Crews have been working around the clock to contain the blaze, and additional resources are on the way.
While this wildfire is in Wyoming, a state that shares a border with South Dakota, the fire activity highlights the ongoing fire season in the region. The Black Hills National Forest and other areas of western South Dakota have their own fire danger concerns, and residents are urged to stay informed about local conditions and restrictions.
