RAPID CITY, S.D. — Law enforcement officials have provided an update on a shooting that took place late Saturday evening near the Pennington County Fairgrounds, stating a juvenile male has been identified and taken into custody.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:05 p.m. in a parking lot west of the fairgrounds. Responding officers located a juvenile male with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, who was then transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police have detained several individuals as part of the ongoing investigation. The shooting appears to be the result of a confrontation between parties who knew each other, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing public safety threat.
Law enforcement also recovered a handgun that the involved parties reportedly attempted to discard. The investigation is a joint effort between the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Dozens of officers from both departments were in the area for the Central States Fair and quickly responded to the scene. Rapid City, SD – At approximately 10:15pm, there were reports of shots fired at the fair and on social media. These came from people on scene and from social media. Reports from the public have lead us to believe it was somewhere near north west of the fairgrounds in the parking lot area. A large presence of law enforcement was on scene and on the 500 block of W Omaha. These maybe unrelated. We will continue to investigate and confirm information.
