FDA’s top drug regulator resigns after federal officials probe ‘serious concerns’

The head of the Food and Drug Administration’s drug center abruptly resigned Sunday amid concerns about his personal conduct. A federal spokesperson said Dr. George Tidmarsh left the agency after federal lawyers began looking into “serious concerns about his personal conduct,” according to an official statement. Tidmarsh had been serving as the FDA’s top regulator since July. His resignation came the same day that a drugmaker filed a lawsuit against him alleging “false and defamatory statements” about its products. The drugmaker, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals, is chaired by one of Tidmarsh’s former business associates.

Wembanyama struggles, Spurs get ‘wake-up call’ in first loss of the season

Victor Wembanyama looked like an MVP candidate and his San Antonio Spurs appeared unstoppable through the first five games of the season. They ran into a bit of a reality check in Phoenix. The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama had a rare off night in San Antonio’s 130-118 loss to the Suns, finishing with nine points on 4-of-14 shooting. It was the first time he was held to fewer than 10 points since Oct. 30, 2024, when he had six against Oklahoma City. The 21-year-old Wembanyama never looked comfortable against a physical Suns defense, struggling to get clean catches in the paint.

Government shutdown could become longest ever as Trump says he ‘won’t be extorted’ by Democrats

The government shutdown is poised to become the longest ever this week as the impasse between Democrats and Republicans has dragged into a new month. President Donald Trump says he “won’t be extorted” by Democrats to reopen the government, making clear that he has no plans to negotiate. In an interview aired Sunday on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump predicted that Democrats will eventually capitulate to Republicans. Trump’s comments signal that the shutdown could continue to drag on as federal workers, including air traffic controllers, are set to miss additional paychecks and as there is uncertainty over whether 42 million Americans who received federal food aid will be able to access the assistance.

Underwater sculpture park brings coral reef art to Miami Beach

A group that is pioneering underwater sculpture parks as a way to establish human-made coral reefs has deployed its first installation off Miami Beach. Last month, crews lowered 22 life-sized, marine-grade concrete cars into the ocean. The project was commissioned by the nonprofit group REEFLINE and will soon be seeded with 2,200 native corals that have been grown in a nearby Miami lab. It’s partially funded by a $5 million bond from the city of Miami Beach, but the group is trying to raise $40 million to extend the project along an underwater corridor just off the city’s 7 miles of coastline.

What’s on the ballot in the first general election since Donald Trump became president

Donald Trump features prominently in state and local elections happening Tuesday, a year after he retook the White House. These elections are the first general contests of his second term. The results could either support or challenge his agenda. Key races include the governor’s seats in Virginia and New Jersey, the New York City mayoral race, and a California proposition on redistricting. More than half of the states have contests. The outcomes could indicate voter sentiment toward Trump’s presidency and influence future political strategies.

Judge again bars Trump administration from deploying troops to Portland

A federal judge in Oregon has once again barred President Donald Trump’s administration from deploying the National Guard to Portland, Oregon until at least Friday. Trump appointee U.S. District Court Judge Karin Immergut issued the ruling Sunday after a three-day trial and says she will issue a final ruling on Friday. Both sides argued over whether protests at the city’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building met the conditions set out by Congress for using the military domestically. Immergut says she found “no credible evidence” that protests grew out of control in Portland before Trump federalized the troops.

Patrick Mahomes wasn’t in the mood to look too far ahead following one of the worst passing performances of his career in Kansas City’s 28-21 loss to Buffalo. And that was especially true when the topic came to the potential of another rematch against the Bills in the playoffs. Mahomes said the Chiefs have to get there first. Mahomes finished 15 of 34 for 250 yards while completing fewer than 50% of attempts for the first time in his nine-year career. And the Chiefs dropped to 5-4 in entering their bye week. The Chiefs have lost five straight regular-season meetings against Buffalo.

Kyle Larson wins second NASCAR championship, denying Denny Hamlin in overtime

Kyle Larson has denied Denny Hamlin his first career championship at Phoenix Raceway. A late caution sent the title-deciding finale into overtime. Hamlin was three laps from shedding the label as the greatest NASCAR driver to never win a championship when William Byron got a flat tire and hit the wall. Hamlin led the field down pit road and got four new tires on his Toyota. Larson only took two tires in his Chevrolet. It meant Larson was fifth for the two-lap sprint to the finish, with Hamlin back in 10th. Ryan Blaney, who was eliminated from title contention last week, won the race.

On Sunday, the Bengals couldn’t hold a late lead for the second straight week and lost 47-42 to the Chicago Bears. Flacco says the Bengals win and lose as a team and there’s no point in getting angry at his teammates on the defensive side. And star receiver Ja’Marr Chase says he just tries to stay positive and not criticize others. The 40-year-old Flacco threw for a career-high 470 yards in the loss.

The end of federal food aid could hit Black Americans hardest

One in eight Americans use federal food aid but halting the SNAP program would hurt Black Americans more than anyone else. Problems with monthly SNAP payments would be part of the fallout from the federal government shutdown. Black Americans are less than 14% of the U.S. population but are more than a quarter of more than 40 million SNAP recipients. Historians and advocates say that’s an example of systemic racism. Even without formal prejudice, America’s long history of racism — from slavery to unfair zoning rules — has left Black communities with a series of major hurdles.

Jaguars’ Cam Little kicks a 68-yard field goal to break Justin Tucker’s NFL record

Cam Little of the Jacksonville Jaguars has broken an NFL record by kicking a 68-yard field goal. Little converted the kick at the end of the first half against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Justin Tucker had the previous record, a 66-yarder in 2021 that gave the Baltimore Ravens a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. While Tucker’s kick hit the crossbar, Little’s boot had plenty of room as it sailed through the uprights. Little came into the game having missed three of his last four kicks, including an extra-point attempt. But the Jaguars’ coaches insisted they had faith in the second-year pro, who hit a 70-yarder in the preseason.

AP has declared winners in elections for nearly 180 years. This is why and how race calls are made

The Associated Press will compile votes and declare winners in elections across the U.S. on Tuesday, just as the news organization has done for nearly 180 years. The U.S. doesn’t have a nationwide body that collects and releases election results. Elections are administered locally, by thousands of offices, following standards set by the states.
