Midseason additions of Misiorowski and Vaughn have played big role in getting Brewers to NLCS

Andrew Vaughn and Jacob Misiorowski were both in the minor leagues with separate organizations at the start of June. One was on the way up and the other on the way down. Now they’re playing key roles for the Milwaukee Brewers in the playoffs. Vaughn hit a tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning that put Milwaukee ahead for good Saturday night in a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the decisive Game 5 of their NL Division Series. Misiorowski earned his second win of the series by allowing just one run over four innings in relief. Milwaukee advanced to face the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

Inability to get runners on base in Game 5 leads to Cubs’ exit from postseason

The Chicago Cubs failed to score in the first inning for the only time in the entire NL Division Series. They didn’t do a whole lot the rest of the night, either. A parade of Milwaukee Brewers relievers silenced a lineup that was too reliant on the home run ball as the Cubs lost 3-1 in the winner-take-all Game 5 of this NLDS. The Cubs’ only run came on Seiya Suzuki’s leadoff homer in the second inning.

Texas Tech’s tortilla tradition is falling flat with coach Joey McGuire after penalties

No. 9 Texas Tech finally got penalized for fans throwing tortillas onto the field during kickoffs. It happened twice in a 42-17 victory over Kansas. The longstanding tradition came under scrutiny in the offseason when Big 12 athletic directors voted 15-1 to approve a policy to discipline home teams for fans throwing items on the field. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt was the lone dissenting vote. He was a bit defiant in defending the tortilla tradition. But coach Joey McGuire has started pleading with fans not to throw tortillas beyond the opening kickoff. His messaging was stern after the two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Jaron Ennis dominates Uisma Lima with first-round TKO 154-pound debut

Jaron Ennis has made a smashing debut at 154 pounds, defeating Uisma Lima with a first-round stoppage on Saturday night. Known as “Boots,” Ennis dropped Lima three times in just 1:58, making a strong statement for bigger fights. This victory should set up a fight with Vergil Ortiz Jr. early next year. Ennis, who is 28 years old, claimed a share of the interim 154-pound title. He previously had an undefeated run at 147 pounds. Ennis, from northwest Philadelphia, is a rising star in boxing and used a right uppercut to stun Lima before knocking him out.

The junior transfer quarterback says he just didn’t play good enough for the 5-1 Sooners. He got hurt three weeks ago in a win over Auburn before surgery during the bye week and not playing last week.

Trump’s indictment of New York attorney general Letitia James stirs concerns for Black women leaders

The indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James on allegations of mortgage fraud has raised alarms among her allies and Black leaders, who condemned it as a politicization of the justice system for President Donald Trump’s personal grievances. James, who had previously prosecuted the Trump Organization for business fraud, has called the charge “baseless” and “a grave violation of our constitutional order.” The claims against her drew parallels with recent efforts by Trump to remove a Federal Reserve Board governor, Lisa Cook, from her post over similar allegations. Some Black leaders say the move carries symbolic weight to Black families, where property ownership has historically been restricted by the legal system through outright and implicit discrimination.

Colorado fans rushed the field after a 24-17 win over No. 22 Iowa State on Saturday. Coach Deion Sanders loved the excitement, but it may lead to a fine for the second straight home game. The school drew a $50,000 fine for derogatory chants during a game against BYU on Sept. 27. The Big 12 may review this incident as well. Sanders expressed his support for the fans, saying he loves to see them rush the field. Security managed the situation, and the school lowered the goalpost to prevent it from being taken.

Unranked Texas looks more like the preseason No. 1 it was in win over rival No. 6 Oklahoma

This certainly looks more like the preseason No. 1 team that Texas was before two early losses sent it plummeting all the way out of the AP Top 25. The Longhorns beat Red River rival sixth-ranked Oklahoma 23-6 on Saturday. It saves their season for now. The 4-2 Longhorns should be back in the next AP poll Sunday. More importantly, they avoided a loss that likely would have ended any realistic chance of getting into the College Football Playoff for the third year in a row.

Sankey denied having private discussions with Campbell about increasing revenue through this method. He emphasized the Southeastern Conference’s preference for negotiating its own deals. Sankey also supports The SCORE Act, which proposes limited antitrust protection for the NCAA. He believes it has a real chance of passing in Congress.

Denny Hamlin has sparked controversy in NASCAR’s playoffs after passing Ross Chastain on the final lap, knocking him out of contention. The move allowed Joey Logano to advance, drawing criticism because Logano and teammate Ryan Blaney have dominated recent championships. The third round begins Sunday in Las Vegas with eight drivers from top teams. NASCAR is closely monitoring race manipulation, especially after last weekend’s events at Charlotte. Officials say they would have acted if Hamlin had been instructed not to pass Chastain. Meanwhile, NASCAR plans to increase horsepower for next season, responding to demand from drivers and fans.

Truce fizzles as U.S.-China trade tensions return to full boil

Months of relative calm in the long-simmering trade war between the U.S. and China may be coming to an end. A spate of moves between the two nations this week has thrust trade hostilities back in the global spotlight, roiled stock markets and raised alarms of what might come next. China announced strict new limits on exports of rare earth minerals crucial to high-tech products. The U.S., in turn, has threatened an additional 100% tax on Chinese imports and export controls on American software. Both sides also hit one another’s ships with new port fees. Experts say it is unclear if it all means a rapid escalation is inevitable or if the threats could pave the way for an agreement.

Crypto spent millions to defeat Sherrod Brown and elect allies. It’s ready for a repeat in 2026

The cryptocurrency industry spent millions last year to unseat a longtime critic, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio, and install its allies in Washington. It’s ready for a repeat in 2026 and may once more target Brown, who’s making a comeback bid. Democrats are hopeful about Brown’s chances to return to the Senate, especially without Donald Trump at the top of the ballot. But crypto interests have even more to spend this time. And the industry has seen the Republican-controlled Congress turn in its favor now that Brown no longer heads the Senate banking committee. But Brown’s approach to crypto sounds different this time.

As the National Guard enters Memphis, some longtime residents are recalling the thousands sent there in 1968. Back then, troops were responding to protests by striking sanitation workers that drew the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., then turned chaotic. A week later, the Guard was back after King was assassinated and uprisings arose across the nation. President Donald Trump said last month he would deploy the Guard and use of a slew of other federal agencies to fight crime in Memphis. A spokesman for the Tennessee Military Department says some Guard members are already assisting with community safety patrols, security and traffic control to help reduce crime.

A sacred lake, a Columbus statue, and an Indigenous people’s long struggle for land

Before white settlers came to Onondaga Lake and the city of Syracuse grew along its shore, it was a sacred place for the Onondaga Nation. Now, the Indigenous nation’s leaders are trying to reclaim a small piece of the lake’s shoreline in upstate New York. But after 14 years of talks, the effort is stalled amid issues related to taxes, the lake’s cleanup and most recently a nearby statue of Christopher Columbus. County lawmakers are open to the idea of giving a parcel of land to the Onondaga. But an aide to a county official involved in the discussions recently upset Onondaga leaders by suggesting they drop their opposition to a statue of Columbus that has stood atop a pillar in downtown Syracuse since 1934.

Republicans try to weaken 50-year-old law protecting whales, seals and polar bears

One of the U.S.’s longest standing pieces of environmental legislation, credited with helping save rare whales from extinction, is the subject of an effort for cutbacks from Republican lawmakers who now feel they have the political will to do so. The Marine Mammal Protection Act, enacted 1972, protects whales, seals, polar bears and other sea animals, and it places restrictions on commercial fishermen and shippers. The legislation has long been a target of conservatives and industry members who now seek to remove key pieces of it. A GOP-led bill is in the works to do just that. Conservation groups adamantly oppose the changes and say they will erase years of hard won gains for jeopardized species
