Josh Allen’s 3 TD passes and Terrel Bernard’s pick secure Bills’ 31-21 win over spiraling Dolphins

Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and Terrel Bernard intercepted Tua Tagovailoa with three minutes left to secure the Buffalo Bills’ 31-21 win over the Miami Dolphins. James Cook had 108 yards rushing and a 2-yard TD as the Bills continued their dominance of Miami. Buffalo has won seven straight and 14 of the past 15, including playoffs, against its AFC East rival. The Dolphins fell to 0-3 and coach Mike McDaniel will likely face more questions about his job security. Allen finished 22 of 28 for 213 yards and improved his record to 14-2 over Miami.

House voting on funding patch as parties trade blame for potential shutdown

Republicans and Democratic lawmakers show no signs of budging as the House takes up a bill to avert a partial government shutdown in less than two weeks. The bill to be voted on Friday would generally continue existing funding levels through Nov. 21. Democratic leaders are adamantly opposed. They say Republicans did not allow them to have a say on the measure, even though some Democratic support will be needed to get a bill signed into law. House Speaker Mike Johnson sounded confident leading up to the vote. Still, President Donald Trump, in a sign it will be close, said on his social media site that “Every House Republican should UNIFY, and VOTE YES!”

Kansas deputy charged with murder in the death of a man in custody

A Kansas sheriff’s deputy has been charged with murder in the death of an inmate who sustained broken ribs after his back was kneeled on after he was wheeled from the infirmary to his cell. A prosecutor said Thursday that deputy Richard Fatherley has been charged with second-degree murder and an alternative count of involuntary manslaughter in the July 5 death of 50-year-old Charles Adair. Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree provided no details. However,  the autopsy said one officer knelt on Adair’s back during an altercation. Fatherley’s attorney says the second-degree murder charge requires the state to prove that the defendant showed an extreme indifference to life, but that this case did not meet that element.

The Federal Communications Commission had warned the network of repercussions if Kimmel wasn’t punished. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr called Kimmel’s comments “truly sick.” The suspension has sparked a range of reactions, with some decrying it as censorship and others supporting the decision. Kimmel has not commented on the suspension.

El Sammak said police ignored their explanations and arrested them at the request of the Egyptian officials. The dismissal of charges comes just days ahead of the start of the U.N. Senate confirms 48 of Trump’s nominees at once after changing the chamber’s rules

The Senate has confirmed 48 of President Donald Trump’s nominees. Republicans acted for the first time under new rules to clear a backlog of executive branch positions that had been delayed by Democrats. Frustrated by the stalling tactics, Senate Republicans moved last week to make it easier to confirm large groups of lower-level, non-judicial nominations. Democrats had forced multiple votes on almost every one of Trump’s picks, infuriating the president and tying up the Senate floor. The new rules allow Senate Republicans to move multiple nominees with a simple majority vote. The rules don’t apply to judicial nominations or high-level Cabinet posts.

While lawmakers in California, Texas and Missouri have voted to advance new congressional maps, Indiana Republican lawmakers have been much more hesitant to take action. President Donald Trump wants Republican states to redraw their maps to try and offset losses in the 2026 midterm election, which typically favor the party opposite to the one in power.

The strategy advances President Donald Trump’s pattern of dealing with foreign governments transactionally. A government watchdog has raised concerns about high administrative costs in Georgia’s Medicaid program. The U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report Thursday highlighting that more money is spent on administration than health care. This disparity is due to costs associated with updating enrollment systems and legal battles. Georgia’s program requires most able-bodied adults to work, take classes, or do community service. Critics warn that millions could lose coverage under these requirements. Georgia is the only state with such requirements and has faced criticism for low enrollment and technical issues. The program’s administrative costs have been dropping recently.

What to know about Fat Bear Week, and the brawny bruins ready to battle for the title

The annual Fat Bear Week featuring gluttonous brown bears at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve is back. Online voting for the fattest juvenile bear begins Thursday. The main event starts Tuesday, when organizers pit 12 of some of the largest brown bears on the planet against each other in a single-elimination, bracket-style tournament online. People can vote at fatbearweek.org after watching livestreams featuring the bears at explore.org. The contest started in 2014, and drew only about 1,700 votes from dedicated bear cam viewers. But the event has exploded online, and more than 1 million votes were cast last year.

Organic food prices could soar as US imposes import restrictions and new tariffs on specialty sugar

The limiting of duty-free organic sugar imports and new tariffs are expected to cause the prices of all kinds of organic products from granola to yogurt to rise in the coming months. Industry officials say that could put some food manufacturers out of business. The Trump administration limited duty-free imports of specialty sugars in July and imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil, a major supplier of organic sugar. Since the U.S. produces almost no organic sugar, manufacturers are facing an estimated 34% increase in sugar costs. They say they will have to reduce profits, raise prices or halt production.

What to know about Brendan Carr, the head of the Federal Communications Commission

ABC has taken Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show off the air indefinitely. The decision came hours after FCC chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination as “truly sick.” President Donald Trump appointed Carr to head the Federal Communications Commission in November. The FCC regulates broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband. Carr was already a longtime member of the commission and served previously as the FCC’s general counsel. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times and both Trump and President Joe Biden nominated him. He has also worked as an attorney at Wiley Rein LLP and clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Kimmel’s future hangs in balance after ABC suspends his late-night show over Charlie Kirk comments

Jimmy Kimmel’s television future is hanging in the balance after ABC suspended his late-night show following the host’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s killing. The comments prompted dozens of stations to say they wouldn’t air the show, a move that was cheered on by a top federal regulator. The veteran late-night comic made several remarks on Monday and Tuesday about the reaction to the conservative activist’s assassination, including saying that “many in MAGA land” were working to capitalize on Kirk’s killing. ABC has aired “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” since 2003. The network acted soon after Nexstar Communications Group said it would pull the show starting Wednesday.

Northrop Grumman cargo ship reaches the International Space Station a day late after engine issue

A supply ship has arrived at the International Space Station after a day’s delay due to a premature engine shutdown. Astronauts used the space station’s robot arm to pluck Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus capsule from orbit Thursday as they soared over Africa. The 11,000-pound shipment should have reached the space station Wednesday, three days after blasting off from Florida. But when the capsule tried to climb higher, its main engine shut down too soon. Engineers traced the problem to an overly conservative software setting.

George Soros’ philanthropy reaches for new ideas as it grapples with the limits of its power

The family philanthropy of hedge fund billionaire George Soros has consistently been one of the largest funders of human rights organizations around the world. But what that means has changed in recent years, with a new focus on addressing inequality. Leonard Benardo is senior vice president at Open Society Foundations. He said the new emphasis comes from a recognition that inequality erodes democracy. He said the foundations continue to also support key parts of the human rights ecosystem. But that the rise of authoritarianism has forced them to grapple with the limits of what they foundations can achieve.

Sarah McLachlan talks Lilith Fair, her first new album in 11 years and yes, that ASPCA commercial

Sarah McLachlan thought her forthcoming album, “Better Broken,” would be her last. At least, for a while. The 11-track collection is her first new full-length in 11 years. It arrives ahead of a tour and a new documentary on the super influential, all-women music festival Lilith Fair that she founded in the ’90s. Speaking with The Associated Press, McLachlan says she believes music is a medicine and hopes her new work heals listeners in some small way. McLachlan says the legacy of Lilith Fair is that it helped dispel some sexist notions in the music industry. She also says she does not regret using her song “Angel” in a famous ASPCA commercial.

More Americans say Israel has ‘gone too far’ in the Gaza conflict, according to new AP-NORC polling

A new poll finds more U.S. adults view Israel’s military action in Gaza as excessive than at the beginning of its war with Hamas. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey shows nearly half of U.S. adults say the military response from Israel in the Gaza Strip has “gone too far.” That’s up from November 2023, when 40% said Israel’s military action had gone too far. But at the same time, Americans overall, particularly Republicans, are less likely to say negotiating a ceasefire in the conflict should be a high priority for the U.S. government than they were just a few months ago.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s new vaccine advisory committee is set to meet for a two-day session. The focus is on vaccines for COVID-19, hepatitis B, and chickenpox. Votes are expected Thursday on hepatitis B and a combined shot for measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox. The committee may reconsider the recommendation for hepatitis B vaccines at birth. And the chairperson already has suggested not giving the MMRV combination shot to children under 4. Some experts are concerned about revisiting these recommendations without new safety data. The committee will make COVID-19 vaccine recommendations on Friday.

WNBA playoffs: Three decisive Game 3s highlight a balanced season

It’s fitting that many of the opening round playoff series are going the distance after the balanced regular season the WNBA had. They’ll be three decisive Game 3s over the next two days. That’s the first time that’s happened since 2015. Last season all four opening round series were sweeps. The WNBA changed its playoff format this season giving each team at least one home game in the opening round which probably has helped. In the past few years, the better seeded team would have the first two games at home. Indiana and Seattle evened up their series on their homecourt Tuesday night and Golden State came within a point of beating No. 1 Minnesota to make it 4-for-4 on series going the distance.
