Kurtz hits 493-foot grand slam, longest MLB homer this season, as Athletics beat Reds 11-5

Nick Kurtz launched a 493-foot grand slam — the longest home run in the majors this season — and the Athletics hammered Hunter Greene early in an 11-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Brent Rooker also went deep and rookie Carlos Cortes hit a two-run shot for his third homer in two games as the Athletics handed Cincinnati another costly loss. Jacob Wilson provided a pair of RBI doubles. Greene, an All-Star last year, was tagged for five runs, four hits and four walks over 2 1/3 ineffective innings, raising his ERA from 2.59 to 3.01. With a chance to gain ground in a crowded wild-card race, the Reds remained 1 1/2 games behind the skidding New York Mets for the final National League playoff spot.

Emmys arrive with ‘The Studio,’ ‘Severance,’ ‘Adolescence’ and ‘The Penguin’ vying for top honors

The Emmys are here. The 77th edition of the awards honoring TV’s best airs on CBS at 8 p.m. Eastern, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. “The Studio” is a heavy favorite to go big in categories including best comedy series and best actor in a comedy for co-creator Seth Rogen. “Severance” brought in the biggest number of nominations this year and is competing in the top drama categories. Noah Wyle could become a first-time Emmy winner for “The Pitt.” And 77-year-old Kathy Bates could become the oldest woman ever and the first woman from a network in a decade to win best actress in a drama.

Garrett Nussmeier threw for 220 yards and a touchdown, Dashawn Spears returned one of his first two career interceptions 58 yards for a touchdown and No. 3 LSU beat Florida 20-10 on Saturday night. After the ejection of LSU preseason AP All-America linebacker Whit Weeks for a targeting penalty in the game’s opening minutes, the Tigers (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) intercepted five of Florida quarterback DJ Lagway’s passes and sacked him three times. Lagway’s career high in interceptions came in what was widely seen as a pivotal bounce-back game for the Gators (1-2, 0-1) and fourth-year coach Billy Napier after a surprising home loss to South Florida a week earlier.

Sayin passes for 3 touchdowns, top-ranked Ohio State pulls away in second half to defeat Ohio 37-9

Julian Sayin passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns, Jeremiah Smith found the end zone twice and top-ranked Ohio State pulled away in the second half for a 37-9 victory over Ohio. The Bobcats (1-2) pulled to 13-9 early in the third quarter when Parker Navarro connected with Chase Hendricks for a 67-yard touchdown. However, the Buckeyes took control by scoring on their next four drives. Jayden Fielding’s third field goal put the Buckeyes (3-0) up 16-9 before Sayin found Smith for a 47-yard touchdown and Carnell Tate for a 49-yard score to make it a three-score game. Smith, who had a career-high nine receptions for 153 yards, put it out of reach by going around left end on a 17-yard reverse to make it 37-9 midway through the fourth quarter.

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a TD.

Tye Edwards rushed for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in overtime to lift West Virginia to a 31-24 win over Pittsburgh. West Virginia improves to 2-1 and bounced back from a pitiful performance a week ago at Ohio. Quarterback Nicco Marchiol was benched for five series in the second half before leading West Virginia on a furious comeback. The Mountaineers scored 10 points in the final five minutes of regulation to send it to overtime. After Edwards’ touchdown run, Pittsburgh’s Eli Holstein threw incomplete on fourth down to end the game. Pittsburgh falls to 2-1 and lost for the fourth straight time in Morgantown.

Arch Manning had two first-half touchdown runs while struggling through another poor passing game in No. 7 Texas’ 27-10 victory over UTEP on Saturday. Manning ran 2 yards for an early touchdown and had a 5-yard scoring run in the final seconds of the half for a 14-3 lead. But he also had 10 straight incompletions, threw an interception in the end zone and was briefly booed by the home crowd in the first half. Manning was 9 of 22 for 97 yards through three quarters with sidearm throws and overthrown receivers before tossing a short touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth. Texas improved to to 2-1, and UTEP fell to 1-2.

According to MLB, the New York Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday sealed at least a National League wild card for the Brewers as they got ready to play Saturday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Keali’i Ah Yat throws for 300 yards and two touchdowns, leading Montana to a 24-23 victory over North Dakota on Saturday. Ah Yat’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Davis with 1:35 left seals the win. Earlier, Ty Morrison’s 42-yard field goal brings Montana within six points. North Dakota, ranked 17th, had a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Latino leaders condemn ICE over incidents in Chicago, including driver’s fatal shooting

Latino leaders are expressing dismay over recent immigration enforcement operations in Chicago. The incidents include a fatal shooting during a traffic stop, the arrest of an immigrant at a barbershop and a standoff between protesters and agents at an immigration processing facility. Democratic Rep. Chuy Garcia said at a Saturday news conference that the recent incidents have people asking themselves, “What’s to stop them from getting any one of us?” Fellow Democratic Rep. Delia Ramirez said she will demand a thorough investigation of the traffic stop that turned deadly. She also called for community unity. The Department of Homeland Security’s “Operation Midway Blitz” campaign targets so-called sanctuary laws in the state.

Quarterback Justin Lamson accounted for 314 total yards and four touchdowns and No. 6 FCS Montana State wore out San Diego 41-7. Lamson threw for 293 yards on 23-for-26 passing and threw three touchdowns and ran for 21 yards and a score. He reached halftime with a 201 yards passing going 16 of 19. He threw a 45-yard touchdown to Taco Dowler for a 7-0 lead on the the Bobcats’ first drive. San Diego scored when Dom Nankil threw an 8-yard touchdown to Josh Heverly with 12:59 left.

Charley Hull has taken a one-stroke lead over top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul after three rounds of the Kroger Queen City Championship. Hull shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday. She birdied four of her final eight holes to post 16-under 200 at TPC River’s Bend. Hull has two LPGA victories, most recently in 2022. The English player is coming off a runner-up finish in Houston as part of the Aramco series on the Ladies European Tour. Thitikul is seeking to become the first multiple winner on the LPGA Tour this season.

Memphis mayor says he got confirmation National Guard would be deployed from Trump’s TV comments

The Memphis mayor says President Donald Trump’s TV announcement was the first hard confirmation he received that Trump would send in the National Guard to address crime. Speaking on CNN on Saturday, Mayor Paul Young said he learned the idea was under consideration when Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s office informed him earlier in the week. Then on Friday morning, Trump made his announcement on Fox News. The governor has said details of how the Guard will factor into efforts to tackle crime are still being ironed out, and talks with Trump are expected to continue into the upcoming week.

Commanders’ Austin Ekeler is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, AP source says

A person with knowledge of the player’s status tells The Associated Press that Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right Achilles tendon. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because nothing had been announced by the club about the extent of Ekeler’s injury. The 30-year-old Ekeler was in his ninth season in the NFL and second with the Commanders. He is the second player on the team who got a season-ending injury in Washington’s 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

Two people with knowledge of the deal say the Dallas Cowboys and left guard Tyler Smith have agreed on a $96 million, four-year extension. The agreement locks up the new cornerstone of the Dallas offensive line long term and includes $80 million guaranteed. Smith is a game into his fourth season as a 2022 first-round draft pick. The 24-year-old has started since he arrived. That included all 17 games at left tackle as a rookie when eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith was sidelined by an injury.

A federal judge is temporarily keeping measures in place to prevent the Trump administration from deporting Guatemalan migrant children in government custody. Judge Timothy J. Kelly’s decision on Saturday stops the removal of children who came to the U.S. alone and are living in shelters and foster care. The decision follows a Labor Day weekend operation where the administration attempted to deport dozens of children. Immigration advocates sued, arguing the children were fleeing abuse or violence. Kelly’s order extends protection until Sept. 16. The government initially claimed the parents requested their return but later backtracked.

Anthony Rizzo celebrated his retirement in the famed bleachers in Wrigley Field. It was quite a day. Rizzo joined the Chicago Cubs as a team ambassador and threw out a ceremonial first pitch to Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, one of his former teammates. Then he grabbed a seat in the bleachers in left for the Cubs’ afternoon game against Tampa Bay. The 36-year-old Rizzo nearly hauled in Moisés Ballesteros’ first career homer for Chicago in the second inning, but it went off his hands. A fan next to Rizzo retrieved the ball. The big first baseman helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016 for the franchise’s first title since 1908.

Sean Astin, who starred in ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Rudy,’ is elected as SAG-AFTRA’s new president

The union that represents tens of thousands of actors and other entertainer and media professionals has elected Sean Astin as its new president. On Friday, SAG-AFTRA elected Astin — who starred in “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings,” among other roles — to succeed Fran Drescher as its president. Astin is the son of the late Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke. He defeated Chuck Slavin in a 79% to 21% vote. Michelle Hurd was elected secretary-treasurer. SAG-AFTRA brings together Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and represents approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, program hosts and others.

Running back Quinshon Judkins on track to make NFL debut after being activated by Browns

Cleveland Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins has been activated to the active roster, setting the stage for him to make his NFL debut against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The second-round pick was on a roster exemption after signing his contract in early September. To make room for Judkins, Cleveland waived wide receiver Gage Larvadain. Judkins missed all of training camp because of a domestic violence accusation, but prosecutors declined to pursue the case. Coach Kevin Stefanski says Judkins has been working hard to get up to speed. The Browns are looking to improve their run game after a poor performance last week against Cincinnati.

Oklahoma strikes sour note with band forced to miss game in Philadelphia because of budget woes

The Pride of Oklahoma marching band has been benched because of budget constraints. The band announced on social media that it couldn’t travel to Philadelphia for Saturday’s game between No. 13 Oklahoma and Temple. Instead, the Saint Joseph’s pep band filled in, leading “Boomer Sooner” at Lincoln Financial Field. The Pride of Oklahoma stated it would still travel to all Big 12 road games this season. The full band will go to Texas, while the pep band will visit South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. The Pride of Oklahoma has played at OU games for more than a century.

Florida man who killed 2 women set for lethal injection next month, extending execution record

A Florida man convicted of killing two women whose bodies were found in a rural pond in 1996 is scheduled to be put to death in October under a death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who continues to set a record pace for executions. Samuel Lee Smithers, 72, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Oct. 14 at Florida State Prison. Smithers would be the 14th person set for execution in Florida in 2025, by far the most in a single year and the most in the U.S. DeSantis signed the death warrant Friday night,  a few days before the scheduled execution Wednesday of David Joseph Pittman. Another convicted killer, Victor Tony Jones, is set to die on Sept. 30.

Minneapolis suburb’s candidates campaign amid fear and violence after political assassinations

As the nation grapples with the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, two candidates are vying for a legislative seat left open by another political attack in Minnesota. Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in June and another state lawmaker and his wife were injured in what investigators call a politically motivated attack. The Republican candidate for Hortman’s now vacant seat, Ruth Bittner, says the political violence briefly made her reconsider running. Democrat Xp Lee, a former city council member, is also running. He supports a ban on semiautomatic weapons to reduce the charged political atmosphere.

Iraq’s Yazidis rediscover lost history through photos found in a museum archive

A University of Pennsylvania researcher is leading an effort to connect photos taken of the Yazidi population in northern Iraq in the 1930s with descendants who lost much of their history in the 2014 Islamic State attacks. Penn doctoral student Marc Marin Webb and others have built an archive of nearly 300 photos taken by Penn Museum archaeologists in the 1930s. They are now sharing them with the Yazidi community to help them reclaim their heritage. Ansam Basher, now a teacher in England, says she was “overcome with emotion” seeing photos of her grandparents on their wedding day.

Millions face skyrocketing health insurance costs unless Congress extends subsidies

There’s bipartisan support in Congress for extending tax credits that have made health insurance more affordable for millions of people since the COVID-19 pandemic. But the credits are still in danger of expiring as Republicans and Democrats are at odds over how to do it. Democrats have been pushing for months to extend the subsidies. They were first put in place in 2021 and extended a year later, when they controlled Congress and the White House, for low income people who get their health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. And some Republicans are now open to keeping the tax credits.

The Minnesota Lynx are favorites to win the WNBA title when the playoffs begin Sunday. Despite a mixed end to the season, they remain top-seeded.
