A Chinese student was questioned for hours in the US, then sent back even as Trump policies shift

A Chinese philosophy student was deported from the United States after landing in Houston to study at the University of Houston. Despite having all the necessary paperwork, he was interrogated and sent back to China with a five-year entry ban. This incident is one of an unknown number of cases where Chinese students are being repatriated upon arrival in the U.S., drawing protests from Beijing. The U.S. government has grown suspicious of Chinese students, fearing they might have ties to the Chinese government. However, President Donald Trump has said he would welcome 600,000 Chinese students, partly to help keep some U.S. schools afloat.

Kemp endorses Derek Dooley for Georgia Senate seat and says an outsider can beat Democrat Jon Ossoff

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has endorsed Derek Dooley for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat in 2026. Kemp says an outsider like Dooley without congressional experience can best challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. Kemp announced his support on Saturday before a University of Georgia football game in Athens. Kemp’s endorsement isn’t a surprise after he told other candidates last month he would back Dooley. Rival Republican Mike Collins argues Dooley lacks the record of political activity and support for President Donald Trump needed to motivate Republican voters. Trump hasn’t yet endorsed anyone, and candidate Buddy Carter argues that is a more important nod.

Athletics’ Nick Kurtz day-to-day with right oblique soreness

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay says Nick Kurtz is day-to-day after experiencing right oblique soreness against the Texas Rangers on Friday. Kotsay says the rookie had an MRI that returned “clean.” Kurtz was not in the lineup for the second game of a three-game series on Saturday. He began feeling discomfort after batting practice Friday. During the game, he drew a walk, was rounding third base, and heading for home on Brent Rooker’s double in the third inning when he apparently aggravated the soreness and slowed down. Kotsay says Kurtz is currently dealing with pain tolerance.

The unwritten rules of tennis and why postmatch handshakes sometimes go awry at the US Open

Two episodes at this year’s U.S. Open have shown that not every postmatch handshake in tennis goes well. There’s been a lot of talk about the unwritten rules of tennis during the Grand Slam tournament in New York that ends next weekend and much of the conversation stems from to-dos up at the net. There was the lengthy back-and-forth between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko and a shorter contentious exchange between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniel Altmaier. No one thinks handshakes should leave the sport, but some wonder if such conversations are better left to the locker room.

For the first time at this U.S. Open, Coco Gauff didn’t double-fault in her first service game. And for the first time, she didn’t get broken to begin things, either. With her work-in-progress serve looking the best it has so far in this trip to Flushing Meadows, the No. 3-seeded Gauff turned in by far her most solid performance Saturday, defeating No. 28 Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a tournament she won in 2023. There were none of the tears or struggles that marked Gauff’s first two matches. Gauff will face Naomi Osaka on Monday for a quarterfinal berth.

Trump is cutting 500-plus jobs at Voice of America and its parent agency despite legal challenges

The agency that oversees Voice of America and other government-funded international broadcasters says it’s eliminating jobs for more than 500 employees. That word came late Friday and could ratchet up a monthslong legal challenge over the news outlets’ fate. A federal judge on Thursday had blocked the administration from removing Michael Abramowitz as VOA director. And the same judge earlier in the week had ruled that the Trump administration had failed to show how it was complying with his orders to restore VOA operations.

The Cowboys announced Jordan’s death without saying when he died or giving a cause of death. Jordan was a first-round draft pick by Dallas in 1963 after a standout career at Alabama, where he played for the late Paul “Bear” Bryant. Jordan was a big part of the “Doomsday” defense that carried the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title in a 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins during the 1971 season.

Chase Briscoe’s playoff expectations increase with JGR as NASCAR postseason starts at Darlington

Chase Briscoe feels the pressure at Darlington Raceway, where NASCAR’s playoffs start Sunday at the Southern 500. A season ago, Briscoe used a late-pass at Darlington to win and get into the postseason for soon-to-be-shuttered Stewart-Haas Racing. Briscoe drives for Joe Gibbs Racing now and understands making the playoffs is only the first step of what his new program expects to accomplish. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron starts as the regular-season champion. Denny Hamlin and Shane van Gisbergen each have a series-high four wins this season. Hamlin is making his 19th postseason appearance as he tries for his first title.

A conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court justice won’t run again, creating an open seat

A conservative justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court says she will not seek reelection, creating an open race for a seat on the court that’s controlled 4-3 by liberals. Justice Rebecca Bradley’s decision announced Friday not to run for a second full term comes after conservative candidates for the highest court in the battleground state have lost each of the past two elections by double digits. The open race, to be decided in April, comes as a number of high-profile issues could make their way to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the coming months, including abortion, collective bargaining rights, congressional redistricting and election rules.

Suspended Little Leaguer’s bat sells for nearly $10,000 at auction

Taking a dip Labor Day weekend? Swimmers face fecal contamination at beaches along US coastline

Thousands of Americans will head to beaches for one last summer splash this Labor Day weekend, and many of them will arrive at beaches where swimming is not advised because of unsafe levels of fecal contamination. Beaches from Crystal River, Florida, to Ogunquit, Maine, were under water quality advisories this week because of elevated levels of bacteria associated with fecal waste. The advisories typically discourage beachgoers from going in the water because the bacteria can cause symptoms including gastrointestinal illness, rashes and nausea. Conservation group Environment America says nearly two-thirds of America’s beaches experienced at least one day in 2024 in which indicators of fecal contamination reached potentially unsafe levels.

Federal judge issues order blocking Trump effort to expand speedy deportations of migrants

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from carrying out speedy deportations of undocumented migrants detained in the interior of the United States. It’s a setback for the Republican administration’s efforts to remove migrants from the country without appearing before a judge first. U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb wrote in a 48-page opinion issued Friday night that the effort is based on the argument “that those who entered the country illegally are entitled to no process under the Fifth Amendment, but instead must accept whatever grace Congress affords them.” The administration says the judge’s ruling ignores federal law and Trump’s power under the Constitution.

Big money and names power the campaign to influence California voters over a new congressional map

California voters will decide in November whether to OK a new congressional map that would benefit Democrats. The campaign to influence voters has already begun. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic allies want voters to approve the new districts to stop what they say are President Donald Trump’s attempts to rig elections. Republicans and others say it’s a Democratic power grab. Days into the campaign, supporters and opponents each brought in more than $10 million. That’s a fraction of the $100 million-plus expected to be spent to win over voters. The contest also is drawing some high-profile names, including actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
