The Menendez brothers were denied parole. They have to wait at least 18 months for their next chance

Erik and Lyle Menendez have both been denied parole by a California board after decades in prison for killing their parents in 1989 at their Beverly Hills mansion. During two days of hearings, the brothers were questioned by panels of two commissioners and asked to speak with complete candor on the abuse they suffered in childhood, their mindsets leading up to and after the murders and various prison transgressions. The hearings marked the closest the brothers have come to winning freedom since their convictions almost 30 years ago.

Falcons right tackle Kaleb McGary will miss significant time with leg injury, coach says

Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris says right tackle Kaleb McGary will miss significant time and is headed to injured reserve after getting carted off at practice this week with a lower left leg injury. Morris said he didn’t have any other details on McGary’s injury. Teams can put two players on injured reserve with a designation to return when rosters are cut to 53 players on Tuesday. McGary’s absence means the Falcons will have to find a new blocker to protect the blind side of left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Kilauea’s eruption is back as the Hawaii volcano shoots lava for the 31st time since December

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has resumed its eruption by shooting an arc of lava high into the air and across a section of its summit crater floor. It’s Kilauea’s 31st display of molten rock since December, a frequency appropriate for one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The north vent at the summit crater began continuously spattering Friday morning and then lava overflowed a few hours later. The vent started shooting lava fountains in the afternoon. Residents and visitors will have a front-row view at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Others can watch popular livestreams made possible by three camera angles set up by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Poised rookie Nolan McLean takes up mantle for struggling Mets rotation in win over Braves

The scuffling New York Mets have been in desperate need of a starter other than David Peterson to pitch deep into games. Making his second major league start, Nolan McLean showed his Mets teammates he’s no ordinary rookie. McLean allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings during New York’s 12-7 win over the Atlanta Braves. And manager Carlos Mendoza was even more impressed that McLean was so composed while pitching in the home park of the Braves, the team he cheered for while growing up in Willow Spring, North Carolina, on a night when Atlanta brought out a bevy of former stars to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of its 1995 World Series championship.

California bill would require restaurants to disclose food allergens on menus

California could become the first U.S. state to require restaurants to disclose common food allergens in each menu item under legislation being considered by state lawmakers. Backers say the measure would protect the growing number of Americans who are severely allergic to foods such as peanuts, eggs and milk. But the restaurant industry says the law would add new burdens and costs on restaurants that are already struggling with tariffs, rising food prices, labor shortages and skittish consumers.

Justice Department won’t defend grants for Hispanic-serving colleges, calling them unconstitutional

The Trump administration said Friday it will not defend a decades-old grant program for heavily Hispanic universities that is being challenged in court, declaring that the government believes the funding is unconstitutional. In a memo sent to Congress, the Justice Department said it agrees with a June lawsuit attempting to strike down grants that are reserved for colleges and universities where at least a quarter of undergraduates are Hispanic. Congress created the program in 1998 after finding that Latino students were going to college and graduating at far lower rates than white students. Justice Department officials argued the program provides an unconstitutional advantage based on race or ethnicity.

The North Carolina Supreme Court has issued favorable rulings for bars seeking compensation from the state for COVID-19 restrictions. They ruled the other case also can return to a trial judge so evidence could be analyzed on the claim the owners’ rights to earn a living were violated.

But until then, the runners can keep moving.

Fall is the time for publishers to release their most anticipated literary fiction, and this season will feature new books from Thomas Pynchon, Kiran Desai and Ian McEwan among others. But it’s also a moment for genres ranging from celebrity memoirs to crime novels to children’s stories. Some works, including Pynchon’s “Shadow Ticket,” were more than a decade in the making. Others will arrive quickly to catch readers up on the recent past. Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ “107 Days” is a campaign memoir that arrives just months after she left office.

US women keep reaching Slam finals and claiming titles. Can an American man win the 2025 US Open?

If there’s such a thing as momentum from tournament to tournament in tennis, the American men have some right now. Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul certainly are getting within reach of ending the country’s unprecedented Grand Slam men’s title drought. Maybe they’re finally ready to win one of those trophies at the U.S. Open, which gets going Sunday. Fritz was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows a year ago, and he, Shelton and Tiafoe each has participated in two Grand Slam semifinals, while Paul has played in one. Andy Roddick in 2003 was the last U.S. man to win a major.

Frank Nazar insists he is the same guy after agreeing to extension with the Blackhawks

As far as Frank Nazar is concerned, everything is pretty much the same. He wants to get better, and he wants to win. Speaking a day after agreeing to a contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks, Nazar insisted he’s the same guy. Nazar says, “I’m still super motivated and still want to be the best player I can be.” Nazar’s $46.2 million, seven-year extension begins with the 2026-27 season, and it stamps the flashy forward as part of the core of a Chicago team trying to climb out of the NHL basement. The Blackhawks went 25-46-11 last season and finished last in the Central Division for the third straight year.

Bowman, the only Hendrick driver without a win this season, has a 60-point lead over Ryan Preece for the final spot. Other contenders include Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kyle Busch, and Chris Buescher. Erik Jones, at 23rd in the standings, must win to make the playoffs.

Former NFL head coaches find benefits in taking advisory roles with different teams

Former Denver Broncos head coach and New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is resetting his coaching career by taking an advisory role in Green Bay helping out the Packers’ defense. It’s similar to the change longtime defensive assistant Robert Saleh made when he came to Green Bay to work with the offense after the Jets fired him as head coach. Teams across the league have hired former head coaches or coordinators for positions that don’t necessarily rise to the ranks of position coaches or coordinators.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s national profile soars with latest Trump fight, but there are risks

Gavin Newsom is having a moment. In the national struggle over U.S. House control, perhaps no politician has more at stake than the California governor, who has emerged as the leading Democratic adversary to President Donald Trump. Newsom is pushing through a plan that could add five Democratic House districts in California, intended to counter five Republican seats Trump wants in Texas. Newsom’s press office is getting attention on social media for mimicking Trump’s blustery style. But voters might reject Newsom’s plan for new House districts. And while Newsom is widely seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, the maneuverings might dampen his chances.
