The future of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has split the United States and its European allies with implications for security in the Middle East. The divide is the latest issue to vex relations between the U.S. and several of its key partners as the Trump administration moves drastically to pare down its foreign affairs priorities and budget. At issue is the operation known as UNIFIL, whose mandate expires at the end of August and needs to be renewed by the U.N. Security Council to continue. The multinational force has played a significant role in monitoring the security situation in southern Lebanon for decades, including during the war last year, but also has drawn widespread criticism.
President Donald Trump walked into a summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin pressing for a ceasefire deal and threatening “severe consequences” and tough new sanctions if the Kremlin leader failed to agree to halt the fighting in Ukraine. Instead, Trump was the one who stood down, dropping his demand for a ceasefire in favor of pursuing a full peace accord — a position that aligns with Putin’s. It was a dramatic reversal that laid bare the challenges of dealing with Putin and the complexities of a conflict that Trump had repeatedly boasted during his campaign that he could solve within 24 hours.
Blake Snell limited his former team to five hits in six innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers regained the NL West lead with a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The Dodgers drew six walks over the first two innings against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease, when they scored five runs on just one hit. Teoscar Hernandez hit his 20th homer of the season in the fifth inning. Michael Conforto had a two-run single in the first inning for Los Angeles (70-53), which had pulled even with San Diego (69-54) by winning the opener Friday. The Padres had taken sole possession of first place in the division Wednesday.
It has been 150 years since miners first flocked to South Dakota’s Black Hills in a gold rush that displaced Native Americans. Now that gold is selling for more than $3,000 an ounce, corporations are seeking approval to explore for and extract the mineral by digging vast pit mines that strip the land bare. The Black Hills Clean Water Alliance says that could mean long-term damage to the environment and tourism. But the effort also promises an economic boost. Jack Henris, president of Dakota Gold, estimates the open pit mine his company is working on would create up to 250 jobs and pay the state up to $400 million in taxes.
A businessman from upstate New York is accused of preying on his neighbors in a massive Ponzi scheme. Burt Marshall in Hamilton, New York, promised clients an 8% annual return on their investments in local rental properties. Marshall filed for bankruptcy protection two years ago, owing nearly 1,000 investors about $95 million. Many victims, including retirees and local workers, lost their life savings. Marshall’s assets, mostly in real estate, were sold in bankruptcy proceedings. Investors are expected to recover only a small fraction of their losses. Marshall pleaded not guilty in June to charges of grand larceny and securities fraud contained in a 49-count indictment.

The Milwaukee Brewers set a single-season franchise record with their 14th straight victory Saturday. And, in keeping with recent form, it wasn’t easy. The MLB-leading Brewers rallied for the second straight game and beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings. This Milwaukee club set a new benchmark — so far — for consecutive victories, surpassing the 1987 team that opened that season by winning its first 13 games. The Brewers will look to add to their streak in the series finale on Sunday. Milwaukee’s overall record for consecutive wins is 16 games, from 1986-87, when they won their last three games in 1986 and their first 13 in 1987.
Akie Iwai of Japan eagled the fifth hole and birdied the other three par 5s at Columbia Edgewater, shooting an 8-under 64 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in The Standard Portland Classic. Iwai is trying to join twin sister Chisato as an LPGA Tour winner this year after second-place finishes in Thailand in February and Los Angeles in April. She put on a ball-striking exhibition Saturday in mostly calm conditions on the tree-lined course, hitting to 3 feet to set up the eagle and twice to a foot for birdie — the last on the par-4 18th to get to 18-under 198. Grace Kim of Australia was second after a 67. She holed a 156-yard shot for eagle on the par-4 17th.
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed ace Zack Wheeler on the 15-day injured list with a blood clot in his right arm. Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski says Wheeler has been diagnosed with a “right, upper extremity blood clot.” Wheeler pitched Friday against Washington and was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. The right-hander allowed two runs and four hits. The 35-year-old Wheeler is 10-5 this season with a 2.71 ERA.
Robert MacIntyre passed a big test in the BMW Championship. He had a five-shot lead over the best player in the world and held his own. MacIntyre made a 40-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68. His lead is at four shots over Scottie Scheffler going into the final round at Caves Valley. Scheffler was efficient as ever in his round of 67. He made one bogey, ending his streak of 37 holes without one. Akshay Bhatia had the first hole-in-one of his tour career that could go a long way toward getting to the Tour Championship.
Akshay Bhatia has made a splash at the BMW Championship with an eagle and a hole-in-one. Rickie Fowler sank a 57-foot birdie putt, while Taylor Pendrith struggled with an errant tee shot. These shots are crucial as players aim for the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings to qualify for the Tour Championship. Bhatia, who started ranked 29th, is now projected at 28th. Fowler, currently 32nd, hopes to move up. Michael Kim and Sungjae Im are also in the mix.
Cade Cavalli earned his first major league victory, James Wood hit a two-run double, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0. Cavalli struck out five and scattered seven hits over seven innings for Washington. The last-place Nationals have won three of four. Trea Turner had three hits for NL East-leading Philadelphia, which was shut out for the eighth time this season and lost for the fourth time in five games.
For more than 40 years, tens of thousands of people have descended upon New Mexico for what is billed as North America’s largest powwow. The Gathering of Nations showcases Indigenous dancers, musicians and artisans from around the world. Organizers announced Saturday that 2026 will be the last time the cultural event is held. They did not provide more details about the decision. The New Mexico fairgrounds in Albuquerque have played host since 2017. But the state is considering redeveloping the site, and it’s unclear what amenities and infrastructure would be available.

The Cleveland Browns secured a 22-13 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The decisive play came from K.J. Henry, who returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Saturday’s game saw most regular starters sitting out, including Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley for the Eagles and Myles Garrett and Jerry Jeudy for the Browns. Andrew Mukuba and Jihaad Campbell, top draft picks for the Eagles, made impressive defensive plays. Cleveland’s Shedeur Sanders, injured earlier in the week, didn’t play. The Browns will host the Rams next while the Eagles face the Jets.
A Florida man who fatally stabbed his estranged wife’s sister and parents and then set fire to their house is scheduled for execution in Florida under a death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. David Pittman is set to die Sept. 17 in the record-extending 12th execution scheduled for this year. DeSantis signed the warrant Friday, as two other men, Kayle Bates and Curtis Windom, await execution later this month. Pittman was convicted and sentenced to death in 1991 on three counts of first-degree murder, according to court records. Jurors also found him guilty of arson and grand theft.
Akshay Bhatia made an ace on the 17th hole of the BMW Championship, winning a car and boosting his chances for the Tour Championship. The top 30 in the FedEx Cup advance, and Bhatia is on the bubble, entering this event in 29th place. His hole-in-one came on a challenging 227-yard, par 3. Bhatia shot a 5-over 75 in the first round Thursday, but a third-round 66 on Saturday moved him to even par. The ace earned him a BMW iX M70 and $125,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation.
It’s not an ice-cream cone. It’s not an Italian rainbow cookie. It’s the baseball bat being used at the Little League World Series. Easton’s 2026 Hype Fire USA Bat with the neon green grip and pink-and-neon yellow barrel is hard to miss at the plate. And the players love them. They get the bat when they first arrive at the Little League compound in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania manager Michael Shaw says he left it up to the players which bats they wanted to use. He says, in his words: “You know, a great color for 12-year-old kids – sour gummy worms.”
The Washington Commanders have activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list. Lingering contract extension talks have kept the 2024 second-team All-Pro off the practice field for the entirety of training camp. McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022. Coach Dan Quinn said the PUP activation was about beginning the “return-to-play” process where McLaurin acclimates physically with enough time for a hopeful return to action for the regular season. Quinn said he doubted McLaurin would play in either of Washington’s remaining preseason games.
Mississippi author Greg Iles has died at 65. His literary agent Dan Conaway said Iles died Friday after a decades-long battle with the blood cancer multiple myeloma. Initially diagnosed with the incurable condition in 1996, he kept his illness private until completing his final novel, “Southern Man,” which was published in 2024. Iles was born in Germany but moved to Natchez, Mississippi, with his family when he was just 3 years old and developed a deep connection with the region. Many of his stories are set in Mississippi, including the “Natchez Burning” trilogy, historical fiction suspense novels exploring race and class in the 1960s Jim Crow South.
