Rays pitcher carted off field and taken to hospital after foul ball into dugout hits him in face

Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge was carted off the field in a frightening scene and taken to a hospital after getting struck in the face by a foul ball lined into the Tampa Bay dugout Thursday night. Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to converse with first responders, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. In the top of the seventh inning, Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman sharply pulled a pitch into the Tampa Bay dugout on the first base side and the ball hit Bigge, a 27-year-old right-hander currently on the injured list. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived to attend to Bigge.

Pacers avoid 2nd straight home-court playoff exit, routing Thunder to force Game 7

The Indiana Pacers did not let another home-court opportunity slip away Thursday night. Not with a raucous crowd on its feet almost from start to finish, not with Reggie Miller and nearly a dozen former Pacers cheering them on and certainly not with the first NBA title in franchise just two wins away. So the Pacers dug down, fought through injuries and finally played their way. They knocked down 3-pointers, forced turnovers and had the heavily gold-clad crowd doing high-fives between the third and fourth quarters as Indiana extended its season with a 108-91 victory over the the Oklahoma City Thunder. The winner-take-all Game 7 is Sunday night in Oklahoma City

NFL widows struggled to care for former players with CTE. They say a new study minimizes their pain

Dozens of widows and other caregivers for former NFL players diagnosed with CTE say a published study is insulting and dismissive of their experience living with the degenerative brain disease. An open letter signed by the players’ wives, siblings and children says the study suggests their struggles caring for loved ones was due to “media hype” about chronic traumatic encephalopathy. They called that patronizing and offensive. CTE has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma. It can lead to memory loss, violent mood swings and depression. The study’s authors say there was no intent to minimize the disease or the caregivers’ struggles.

Scheffler hits a perfect shot and plenty of great ones for a 62 to share lead at Travelers

Scottie Scheffler hits a lot of great shots. Rarely does he hit one he considers close to perfect. Such was the case in the opening round of the Travelers Championship. It was a 3-iron to 10 feet for eagle on his way to a 62. That’s his lowest round at the TPC River Highlands. And he shares the lead with Austin Eckroat. They were two shots ahead of a group that includes Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. It was a nice break from the brutal week at Oakmont for most. U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun shot 73.

Botafogo stuns Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in Club World Cup on Igor Jesus’ goal

Botafogo has stunned Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in each club’s second match of the Club World Cup. Igor Jesus scored late in the first half, and the South American champions made it stand up through a tense second half while improving to 2-0-0 in Club World Cup group play. PSG hadn’t lost in any competition since May 3, but the European champions looked understandably weary at times. Jesus’ stunning score in the 36th minute was the first goal allowed since May 17 by PSG. The French powerhouse had outscored its last three opponents by a combined 12-0, winning the French Cup and the Champions League final.

Democrats in Virginia have a hefty fundraising advantage heading into November general election

Democrats in Virginia have built up a hefty fundraising advantage for their effort to reclaim the governor’s mansion in November’s general election. The fall contests are seen as a bellwether for the party in power in Washington ahead of next year’s midterms. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA spy turned congresswoman, has a more than 2-to-1 fundraising advantage over her Republican opponent for governor, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Both were unopposed for their party’s nominations and can pivot toward November without having to overcome a primary challenge. Virginia is one of two states that host statewide elections this year. Democrats’ outsized fundraising lead may reflect Democratic enthusiasm and the party’s ability to push voters to the polls.

Sig Sauer, faced with lawsuits over a popular pistol, gets protection in New Hampshire

Faced with mounting lawsuits over a popular pistol, New Hampshire-based gunmaker Sig Sauer has gotten protection in the form of a new state law that makes it harder to take the manufacturer to court. The law covers all gun manufacturers and federal firearm licensees regarding the “absence or presence” of certain safety features.  Supporters in the Republican-led Legislature say it was needed to help a major employer after lawsuits representing more than 70 people were filed against Sig Sauer about the design of the P320 pistol. Many of the plaintiffs are law enforcement officers from around the U.S. who say the gun can go off without the trigger being pulled. Sig Sauer denies the allegations and says the gun is safe.

There was no championship celebration for the Thunder on Thursday night — and their first chance at winning these NBA Finals was a colossal dud. Heavy rain, flooding and a rock slide have again closed a section of the major cross country highway Interstate 40 along its narrow corridor through the Great Smoky Mountains. Engineers say they expect the road to be closed at least two weeks. The slide and flood happened Wednesday afternoon around mile marker 450 in Tennessee, just to the west of the state line with North Carolina. The damaged section is part of 12 miles of I-40 in North Carolina and Tennessee that was washed away or heavily damaged by flooding that roared through the Pigeon River gorge during Hurricane Helene in late September. Crews reopened one narrow lane in each direction in March.

But the respite didn’t last long. On Wednesday, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin declared that worksite enforcement “remains a cornerstone of our efforts to safeguard public safety, national security and economic stability” and that there will be “no safe spaces for industries who harbor violent criminals” or undermine enforcement efforts. The flipflop has baffled businesses trying to figure out the government’s actual policy.

Who will have the 2025 song of the summer? We offer some predictions

What makes a great song of the summer? Is it an up-tempo pop banger? Something with an earworm chorus? Does it need to feature the words “summer” or “sunshine” or “California”? The Associated Press views the song of the summer as the one that takes over those warm months between June and August. And in 2025, there are a number of contenders. Those include Bad Bunny’s “NUEVAYoL,” Alex Warren’s “Ordinary,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” KATSEYE’s “Gnarly,” Drake’s “Nokia,” Addison Rae’s “Fame Is a Gun” and the viral track “Boots on the Ground” by 803Fresh.
