Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to the Giants in a blockbuster deal

The Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal. The Giants sent right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league righty Jose Bello to the Red Sox for the 28-year-old designated hitter, who had bristled at his demotion from third base this year. Devers is one of baseball’s most feared sluggers. He is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games after he connected for a solo drive in Boston’s 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees.

Dodgers say Shohei Ohtani will pitch on Monday night against Padres

Shohei Ohtani is going to be the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against San Diego, 21 months after the two-way star had elbow surgery. The Dodgers made the announcement after their 5-4 win over San Francisco. Ohtani likely will be used as an opener as the NL West leaders kick off a four-game set against the visiting Padres. Ohtani has not pitched in a game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he got hurt during a start for the Los Angeles Angels against Cincinnati. He had Tommy John surgery on Oct. 1, 2018, and is recovering from right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023.

US hopes 5-0 win over Trinidad starts upswing after longest losing streak since 2007

The U.S. hopes a blowout win over the world’s 100th-ranked team can start to lessen the pessimism created by the Americans’ longest losing streak since 2007. Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna had a pair of assists in a 5-0 rout of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in the Americans’ CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. Victory in the Group D opener came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic’s desire to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in.

Two-time Indy 500 winner Newgarden flips car, walks away from wreck in IndyCar race at Gateway

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden flipped his car upside down during Sunday night’s race at Gateway outside St. Louis. Newgarden crashed midway through the race after contact with Louis Foster. Foster spun into the wall and shot across the track, stopping directly in Newgarden’s path. Newgarden was unable to avoid the direct collision and his car launched into the air, damaged the SAFER barrier, landed on its roof and then skidded for a considerable distance. The IndyCar safety crew immediately helped Newgarden from his car and he radioed his Team Penske crew he was fine.

Trump directs ICE to expand deportations in Democratic-run cities, undeterred by protests

President Donald Trump has directed federal immigration officials to prioritize deportations from Democratic-run cities after large protests have erupted in Los Angeles and other major cities against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Trump in a social media posting Sunday called on ICE officials “to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.” He added that to reach the goal officials ”must expand efforts to detain and deport” people in the country illegally in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

Rory McIlroy ends his US Open on a high note with a 67. The next major is in his home country

Rory McIlroy shot a 3-under 67 to finish the U.S. Open at 7 over. That’s a performance he can build off as he works toward the year’s final major. Next month’s British Open at Royal Portrush is in his home country of Northern Ireland. First, McIlroy has the Travelers Championship in Connecticut next week. At times this week, he seemed eager to leave Oakmont behind. But he ended up feeling pretty good about his round Sunday — and the state of his driver.

Hatton, Ortiz and Hovland had a shot at the US Open. Then Oakmont happened

Famed Oakmont bared its teeth on the back nine at the U.S. Open. Tyrrell Hatton, Carlos Ortiz and Viktor Hovland were part of a large group of players who found themselves in the mix during the final round. All three had their issues with the brawny course. Hatton’s chances ended when his drive on the 17th hole got caught up in the rough above a bunker. A wayward drive on the 15th cost Ortiz. Hovland hovered all day but couldn’t make the putts necessary to keep up with winner J.J. Spaun.

MacIntyre made Spaun earn the U.S. Open title, nearly pulling off a record-tying comeback

Robert MacIntyre shot a 2-under 68 in the final round to finish the U.S. Open at 1 over — two strokes behind winner J.J. Spaun. MacIntyre was seven strokes back of leader Sam Burns at the beginning of the day. He actually made up 10 shots on Burns but couldn’t outlast Spaun. Arnold Palmer is still the only U.S. Open winner to come from seven strokes behind in the final round. He did it in 1960 at Cherry Hills. MacIntyre settled for sole possession of second place.

Texas rookie Kumar Rocker keeps scoreless start intact with help from pickle juice

Texas Rangers rookie Kumar Rocker kept a scoreless start intact by working through an eventful fifth inning that included downing three small bottles of pickle juice, the last of which resulted in a mound visit charged to a ball boy. The 25-year-old right-hander apparently cramped up after striking out White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor for the first out of the fifth. First baseman Jake Burger brought two small bottles of pickle juice from the dugout as Rocker chatted with the trainer. Play resumed, and the ball boy soon brought out a third bottle. Umpires charged Texas with a mound visit for that. Rocker eventually got out of the inning and didn’t allow a run over his five frames.

2 detainees recaptured after escape from New Jersey immigration detention center, 2 still at large

FBI officials say two detainees who escaped from a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey last week have been recaptured, while another two remain at large. Authorities say the four men busted out of the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark during reports of disorder there. They say the men broke through an interior wall that led to an exterior one, and were able to escape from a parking lot. The FBI said Sunday that Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada were back in custody. Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes and Andres Felipe Pineda-Mogollon are still on the lam.

Carlota Ciganda wins Meijer LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years

Carlota Ciganda birdied the final two holes to win the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years, while Lexi Thompson had two late bogeys to dash her bid to end a long drought of her own. Ciganda hit to a foot to set up her birdie on the par-4 17th, then made a 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th to avoid a playoff with playing partner Hye-Jin Choi. Ciganda shot a 5-under 67 — her fourth straight round in the 60s — to finish at 16-under 272. The 35-year-old Spanish player won for the first time since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Thompson had a 70 to tie for fourth.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle offers defense of Scott Foster after referee receives criticism in Game 4

Indiana coach Rick Carlisle offered an impassioned and somewhat unprompted defense of referee Scott Foster on Sunday, evidently aware of the mountains of online criticism that came after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Foster was one of the three on-court referees assigned to Game 4, which had more fouls called and more free throws awarded than any of the three previous games in the series. Foster — who has long been a lightning rod for critics — did not work any of those first three games.

Pacers and Thunder are set for a pivotal Game 5 in an NBA Finals that has been back and forth

The ratings are down for these NBA Finals, as was expected. Oklahoma City vs. Indiana is a small-market series and the numbers reflect exactly that, with viewership down about 20% from last season and on pace for the poorest TV turnout since the bubble finals in 2020. Don’t blame the Thunder and Pacers for that. It’s been a back-and-forth over the first four games — and now, a best-of-three will decide the NBA title. Game 5 is in Oklahoma City on Monday night, with the Thunder trying to take their first lead of the series and the Pacers trying to head back home one win from a championship.

Jalen Williams’ resilience helps Thunder gain solid position heading into Game 5 vs. Pacers

Jalen Williams keeps bouncing back. The Oklahoma City Thunder’s All-Star forward has suffered through poor shooting stretches in each of the past three playoff series. And each time, he’s recovered to help the Thunder win critical games. After two rough shooting nights to start the Finals series against the Indiana Pacers, he found his stride. In Game 4, Williams handled the ball more and was aggressive. He scored 27 points and made 8 of 18 field goals and 11 of 11 free throws. His success helped the Thunder win 111-104 to even the series at 2-2.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Yankees slugger Aaron Judge create happy moment for Cora’s twin boys

Red Sox manager Alex Cora wanted his twin 7-year-old sons to meet the Yankees’ Aaron Judge, the biggest star of his team’s AL East foe. Xander and Isander Cora objected, not wanting to cross paths with a rival. Cora persisted, and Xander and Isander Cora got to meet the 6-foot-7 All-Star before Boston’s 4-3 win on Saturday night. The brothers wore Boston’s new alternate jerseys in Fenway green. Cora took a photo of the boys with Judge, who gave one of them a set of batting gloves.

The Club World Cup is finally up and running — and soccer may never be the same

After more than a year of uncertainty and criticism, the Club World Cup kicked off in Miami, and soccer may never be the same. At least that’s what FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been telling anyone who would listen. Soccer’s newest tournament is what the sport has been waiting for, Infantino says, and on Saturday, despite considerable pushback and obstacles, he turned his personal passion project into a reality. The Swiss lawyer who holds one of the most powerful positions in the world as head of soccer’s governing body was on hand at a largely full Hard Rock Stadium to watch Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami draw 0-0 with Egyptian team Al Ahly in the opening game.

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Egypt’s Al Ahly battle to scoreless draw in Club World Cup opener

Lionel Messi was denied a sensational late winner as Inter Miami had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Egypt’s Al Ahly in the opening game of the Club World Cup on Saturday night. Argentina’s eight-time Ballon d’Or winner looked set to provide a stunning finish in front of a crowd of more than 60,000 – whipping a curling long shot towards the top corner in the sixth minute of added time. But he was denied his moment of glory as Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy pushed the ball onto the crossbar. Messi also shaved the post with a free kick earlier in the second half.

Black dads go public with support for their kids with autism — and each other

A growing number of Black fathers with autistic children are looking to be more visible in the national autism conversation through podcasts, nonprofits and summits that specifically address their experience. These men say that their hope is not only to be considered more than sidekicks to the mothers of the children, but also to help other Black dads accept autism diagnoses and not prolong getting kids the help that they need. Federal data shows that Black children have had a higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorder than white children since 2020. Experts say that’s mostly because of better awareness.

Nationals’ bat-retrieving dog Bruce laps up pregame attention, makes MLB debut

The dog days of summer arrived at Nationals Park. Bruce, a 21-month-old golden retriever, fetched a bat during a ceremony before the Washington Nationals’ game against the Miami Marlins as part of a Pups in the Park promotion. He retrieved bats the last two seasons with the Rochester Red Wings, Washington’s Triple-A affiliate. Bruce, wearing a bandana with an “MLB debut” patch he received when he arrived at the stadium, was presented a commemorative bat. He then took a circuitous route from the dugout toward first base after Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped the bat in foul territory before the bat dog collected his quarry.

Justice Department’s early moves on voting and elections signal a shift from its traditional role

The Trump administration’s Justice Department has begun targeting Democratic and presidential swing states with demands for election data or changes to voter registration procedures. While the requests may seem technical and mundane, collectively they suggest the department is moving away from its traditional stance of protecting access to the ballot box. Instead, the actions address concerns that have been raised by a host of conservative activists following years of false claims surrounding elections in the U.S. By targeting certain states — presidential battlegrounds or those controlled by Democrats — they also could be foreshadowing an expanded role for the department in future elections.

The GOP’s big bill would bring changes to Medicaid for millions

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley has been clear about his red line as the Senate takes up the One Big Beautiful Bill Act: no Medicaid cuts. But what, exactly, would be a cut? Republicans acknowledge that the main cost-saving provision in the bill  would cause millions of people to lose their coverage. But they  insist they are not cutting the vital safety net program but simply rooting out what they call waste fraud and abuse. Whether that argument lands with voters could go a long way toward determining whether Trump’s bill ultimately ends up boosting or dragging down Republicans as they campaign for reelection.
