Shohei Ohtani hits 2 homers against Giants, ending the Dodgers star’s 10-game homer drought

Shohei Ohtani has hit two homers against the San Francisco Giants, emphatically ending the three-time MVP’s longest homer drought since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani led off the game with his 24th homer, hammering Landen Roupp’s fourth pitch 419 feet deep into the right-field bleachers with an exit velocity of 110.3 mph. The slugger had been in a 10-game homer drought since June 2, going 10 for 40 in that stretch with no RBIs. Ohtani then led off the sixth with his 25th homer on Tristan Beck’s breaking ball outside the strike zone.

What US adults think about Pope Leo XIV, according to a new AP-NORC poll

A new AP-NORC poll finds that just over a month after Pope Leo XIV became the first U.S.-born pontiff, American Catholics are feeling excited about their new religious leader. About two-thirds of American Catholics have a “very” or “somewhat” favorable view of Pope Leo, according to the new survey, while about 3 in 10 don’t know enough to have an opinion. Very few Catholics — less than 1 in 10 — view him unfavorably. Among Americans overall, plenty of people are still making up their minds about Pope Leo. But among those who do have an opinion, feelings about the pope are overwhelmingly positive.

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Egypt’s Al Ahly battle to scoreless draw in Club World Cup opener

Lionel Messi was denied on a long shot in extra time and Inter Miami and Egypt’s Al Ahly settled for a scoreless draw in the opening game of the Club World Cup. Argentina’s eight-time Ballon d’Or winner kicked a long, curling shot from the right side that was tipped by diving goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy and brushed off the crossbar in front of a crowd of more than 60,000 at Hard Rock Stadium. Messi also shaved the post with a free kick in the second half. Miami had its own good fortune, surviving a first half onslaught by 12-time African champion Al Ahly, with goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saving a penalty from Trezeguet just before the break.

Sam Burns holds steady on soggy Oakmont to lead US Open

Sam Burns has the lead in the U.S. Open on a rain-soaked Oakmont course and faces his biggest test. The 28-year-old from Louisiana has never contended in 20 previous majors. He shot a 69 with a late birdie and a great lag putt for par. That gives him a one-shot lead over Adam Scott. The Australian shot a 67 to finish one shot behind. Scott is the only player in top 10 who has won a major. J.J. Spaun shot 69 and also was one back. Viktor Hovland was the other survivor to par. He was three back.

The Army turns 250. Trump turns 79. Cue funnel cakes, festive bling, military might — and protest

There were funnel cakes, stands of festival bling and American flags aplenty. Also, the spray of tear gas against nonviolent marchers in Atlanta, rolling waves of anti-Trump resistance coast to coast and a confrontation in Los Angles. There, police on horseback charged the protesters and fired tear gas and crowd control projectiles. In scenes of celebration, protest and trepidation, masses of Americans cheered a rousing Army parade like none seen in Washington in generations. Masses more rallied across the country against a president derided by his critics as an authoritarian, would-be king. On Saturday, the U.S. Army turned 250 and President Donald Trump turned 79.

At LIV and loving it, Leishman returns to the majors and gets in the mix at the US Open

Marc Leishman’s bunker shot splashed out of the sand, took four quick bounces and rolled straight into the hole for birdie on the long, par-3 eighth hole at Oakmont. Suddenly, a name that was once no stranger to leaderboards at majors was up there once again. Not bad for a player who had every reason to wonder if he’d ever get another chance to play in one, let alone contend. The 41-year-old Australian, now on the LIV tour, shot 2-under 68 at the U.S. Open on Saturday. He’ll start the final round tied for 11th, eight shots off the lead.

The loss left the Rockies with the worst record through 70 games in the modern era. Colorado fell to 13-57 and surpassed the 1932 Boston Red Sox, who were 14-56, for the worst 70-game mark since 1901. The resurgent Braves have outscored the Rockies 16-5 in the first two games of the season after setting a scoring high in Friday night’s 12-4 win.

Woeful Rockies absorb 2 records for futility with 19 whiffs and worst 70-game mark in modern era

The Colorado Rockies have made history no team wants to claim. With their 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves, the Rockies have the worst 70-game record in the modern era. They fell to 13-57. The 1932 Boston Red Sox had the previous worst 70-game mark at 14-56. The Rockies made more inglorious history by setting a team record with 19 strikeouts. Veteran first baseman Kyle Farmer says the Rockies “don’t care” about making history for the worst start in baseball’s modern era. Farmer says the players simply have to move on for the next game.

The death toll from heavy rains that inundated parts of San Antonio has risen to 13, and all those missing have been found.  A downpour caused fast-rising floodwaters to carry more than a dozen cars into a creek on Thursday. Some people climbed trees to escape. Firefighters rescued more than 70 people across the nation’s seventh-largest city. The San Antonio Fire Department said Saturday 11 of those who died were found in the search area around Beital Creek, where cars got stuck or overturned.

McIlroy breaks his US Open silence after shooting a 74 in the third round at Oakmont

Rory McIlroy held his first post-round media session of the U.S. Open after shooting a 4-over 74 in the third round at Oakmont. He’d skipped talking to reporters after playing Thursday and Friday. McIlroy said that was out of frustration with reporters. Although he then said he wasn’t necessarily annoyed with reporters — but “just the whole thing.” It was only a couple months ago that McIlroy won the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam. Following that up has been difficult. McIlroy’s driver was deemed nonconforming before the PGA Championship. He was annoyed that that news leaked out and didn’t speak to the media after any of the four rounds at Quail Hollow.

Trump curbs immigration enforcement at farms, meatpacking plants, hotels and restaurants

The Trump administration has directed immigration officers to pause arrests at farms, restaurants and hotels after President Donald Trump expressed alarm about the impact of aggressive enforcement. The move comes after Stephen Miller, chief architect of Trump’s immigration policies, said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would target 3,000 arrests a day, up from about 650 a day during the previous five months. The New York Times reports the directive Thursday told ICE to halt workplace investigations in key industries. A U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity confirmed the contents of the order.

‘Gas station heroin’ is technically illegal and widely available. Here are the facts

Health officials want you to think twice before buying brightly colored energy shots and supplements often sold at gas stations, convenience stores and smoke shops. The products are sometimes called “gas station heroin,” and contain tianeptine. That’s an antidepressant that can be addictive and carries the risk of serious side effects. U.S. poison control centers have reported a steady rise in calls linked to the drug for more than a decade. The drug has never been approved by the FDA for any medical condition in the U.S. and cannot legally be added to foods and beverages or sold as a dietary supplement. About a dozen states have prohibited or restricted tianeptine.

Nationals’ bat-retrieving dog Bruce laps up pregame attention, makes MLB debut

The dog days of summer arrived at Nationals Park. Bruce, a 21-month-old Golden Retriever, fetched a bat during a ceremony before the Washington Nationals’ game against the Miami Marlins as part of a Pups in the Park promotion. He retrieved bats the last two seasons with the Rochester Red Wings, Washington’s Triple-A affiliate. Bruce, wearing a bandana with an “MLB debut” patch he received when he arrived at the stadium, was presented a commemorative bat. He then took a circuitous route from the dugout toward first base after Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped the bat in foul territory before the bat dog collected his quarry.

Nicklaus and Miller reminisce about their US Open victories at Oakmont

Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller are back at Oakmont and filled with great memories. And they say one thing that hasn’t changed is that putting is key to winning a U.S. Open at Oakmont. Nicklaus says that’s what he told players in the locker room before the third round. Nicklaus won the first of his 18 professional majors in the 1962 U.S. Open at Oakmont in a playoff over Arnold Palmer. Nicklaus had only one three-putt over 90 holes. Miller shot 63 in the final round to win the 1973 U.S. Open. His only bogey was three-putting No. 8.

Protests, parades and Pride: One week in June 2025 is drawing stark American fault lines

On the first weekend: a vision of the nation built upon inclusivity and the tenets of liberalism — a conception of country that incorporates generations of fights for equity, for compassion, for expanding what it means to be an American. On the second weekend, in the same town: a public show of strength and nationalism constructed on a foundation of military might, law and order, a tour de force of force. And on the days in between, in a city 2,000 miles from the capital locked in pitched battles over the use — abuse, many contend — of federal power and military authority. Today’s United States is encapsulated in a single week in June 2025, its triumphs and frictions on vivid display.

Thunder embraced their moments of adversity this season. It paid off in Game 4 of the NBA Finals

Contrary to popular belief not everything was easy for the Oklahoma City Thunder this season. They had lineup issues at times because of injuries. Players had slumps. It might not have been too noticeable because the team was winning just about every game, but there were moments of frustration. Coach Mark Daigneault embraced those moments, knowing adversity would arrive in the playoffs. And when it has hit, the Thunder have answered.

The ties that bind: The WNBA’s Fever and NBA’s Pacers are more than just neighbors in Indianapolis

Caitlin Clark is doubly disappointed about how the NBA Finals are going right now. One, the Indiana Pacers lost Game 4. Two, Clark can’t be there for Game 6. Clark and the Indiana Fever have a good reason for why they won’t be at the Pacers’ last home game of the season on Thursday, when Indiana — which will be either up 3-2 or down 3-2 to the Oklahoma City Thunder by then, depending how Game 5 goes — plays host to Game 6 of the NBA Finals. The Fever will be at Golden State that night, playing the expansion Valkyries.

Sam Burns avoided the late meltdown that cost him in the first round of the U.S. Open. He had a 65 and has a one-shot lead at Oakmont. Best of all he was long gone before the calamity set in at Oakmont. It was a long day with rounds approaching six hours. And it was a wild finish. Rory McIlroy threw a club and smashed a tee marker. Phil Mickelson missed the cut with a pair of double bogeys in what might be his final U.S. Open. Scottie Scheffler couldn’t find a fairway and was seven shots behind.

What’s left for the Supreme Court to decide? 21 cases, including state bans on transgender care

The Supreme Court is in the homestretch of a term that has lately been dominated by the Trump administration’s emergency appeals of lower court orders seeking to slow President Donald Trump’s efforts to remake the federal government. But the justices also have 21 cases to resolve that were argued between December and mid-May, including a push by Republican-led states to ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors. One of the argued cases was an emergency appeal, the administration’s bid to be allowed to enforce Trump’s executive order denying birthright citizenship to U.S.-born children of parents who are in the country illegally. The court typically aims to finish its work by the end of June.

Democrats squaring off in Virginia primaries say one name a lot: Trump

Democrats in Virginia are holding primary elections Tuesday, and one name is getting talked about a lot: President Donald Trump. The White House’s onslaught of changes impacting Virginia has been fodder for their campaigns, particularly in the nomination contest for attorney general. It comes as Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, a Republican, is running for reelection. Democrats are not making it easy for him. If they are not lamenting Trump, they are criticizing Miyares for not using his position to defend Virginians from the president.
