Randle’s revival for the T-wolves in their Game 3 win started with a pep talk from a vital teammate

The Minnesota Timberwolves made quite an entrance in the Western Conference finals even if their 143-101 victory in Game 3 was a late arrival. Julius Randle’s performance was the epitome of the response. He had 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting with four rebounds, three assists and no turnovers while feeding off the home-crowd energy all game. Randle disappeared in Game 2 with six points on 2-for-11 shooting with four turnovers and was on the bench for the entire fourth quarter. Star teammate Anthony Edwards was the first person who spoke with him after the game, in encouragement to bounce back.

A crypto investor is charged with kidnapping and torturing a man in an NYC apartment for weeks

Officials say a cryptocurrency investor has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, assaulting and holding a man against his will for several weeks in an upscale Manhattan town house. Authorities say it was part of a scheme to get his Bitcoin password and empty his virtual wallet. Prosecutors say the 28-year-old victim escaped Friday and flagged down a traffic officer on the street for help. The investor was identified by authorities as 37-year-old John Woeltz. He was arraigned Saturday on kidnapping, assault and other charges and ordered held without bail. Police say the victim was taken to the hospital and had injuries that were consistent with his descriptions of the torture and beatings.

Anthony Edwards and the Wolves strike back with 143-101 win to cut Thunder’s West finals lead to 2-1

Anthony Edwards had 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists in just three quarters to lead the re-energized Minnesota Timberwolves in a 143-101 victory over Oklahoma City in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. The Thunder’s lead in the series was cut to 2-1. Julius Randle added 24 points and rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. had 15 points in 13 minutes to highlight a big boost from the bench for the Wolves. They caused all kinds of cracks in the Thunder’s NBA-best defense after struggling to solve it in two lopsided losses on the road.

Shohei Ohtani likely won’t make big league mound return until after All-Star break

On the eve of Shohei Ohtani facing batters for the first time since elbow surgery in September 2023, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the two-way star likely won’t return to a major league mound until after the All-Star break. Ohtani is to pitch batting practice before Sunday night’s series finale against the New York Mets. Roberts says “he’s doing his first simulated game for two innings and in theory you got to build a starter up to five, six innings.” He adds: “And so just the natural progression, I just don’t see it being before that.”

An Oregon man who quit his job to set sail with his cat arrives to cheering fans in Hawaii

An Oregon man who quit his job at a tire company and liquidated his retirement savings to set sail for Hawaii with his cat reached his destination Saturday. His arrival on Oahu ended a weekslong journey that he documented for his mass of followers on social media. Oliver Widger was greeted by a throng of fans — as well as Hawaii Gov. Josh Green — at the Waikiki Yacht Club. He became an online sensation with his story, which followed a diagnosis four years ago with a syndrome that carried a risk of paralysis and made him realize he hated his job. He quit his job with the goal of buying a sailboat and sailing around the world.

Judge insists that despite hitting .395 with 18 homers, he doesn’t ‘feel too great at the plate’

Aaron Judge insisted he doesn’t pay too much attention to his numbers, which for the record are eye-opening. He’s hitting .395 with 18 homers and 46 RBIs. Even more, the New York Yankees slugger also hinted he’s not as locked in as one might think. He said he doesn’t “feel too great at the plate” after New York’s 13-1 win over the slumping Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Now that’s a scary thought. After all, he’s flirting with .400 well into May. He has certainly taken a liking to Coors Field in his first regular season visit this weekend, homering in back-to-back games.

Texas is closer to putting the Ten Commandments in classrooms after a key vote

A push to put the Ten Commandments on display in all Texas public school classrooms is closer to reaching Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk. The proposal cleared a major hurdle Saturday by winning preliminary approval in the state’s Republican-controlled House. The measure will likely to draw a swift legal challenge from critics who consider it a constitutional violation of the separation of church and state. A federal court last year blocked a similar law in Louisiana. The Texas plan is expected to get a final vote in the house in the next few days. The governor has indicated he will sign it.

Police say a 59-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, and the city Department of Environmental Protection said the man had worked for the agency for 33 years. The explosion happened on the New York City-owned Hunts Point, a boat that takes raw sewage to a treatment plant.

Ben Griffin and Matti Schmid matched each other in the third round at Colonial. They will go into the final round Sunday tied four strokes ahead of the field and with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lurking not much further back. Griffin and Schmid shot 2-under 68s on a day when both birdied the first three holes. That are 13-under 197 after posting the same scores for the third day in a row at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Rickie Fowler shot 67 and is third at 201. Scheffler began the day 10 strokes back, but shot a 6-under 64 that included three late bogeys.

PGA champ Scheffler still has shot at 3rd win in row with big move at Colonial despite 3 late bogeys

Scottie Scheffler knew he had to make a bunch of birdies in the third round at Colonial for any chance to win in his third consecutive start. The world’s No. 1 player did just that, but also had three bogeys on the back nine. Scheffler shot a 6-under 64 at Hogan’s Alley to get to 7 under, and will begin the final round within six strokes of the lead. He began the third round 10 strokes back at the Charles Schwab Challenge. It comes a week after his third major victory at the PGA Championship, and after winning his beloved hometown Byron Nelson tournament earlier this month.

Austin Cindric not concerned about future with Team Penske after his father was fired this week

Austin Cindric is not worried about his future with Team Penske after his father Tim Cindric was fired by team owner Roger Penske as the team’s IndyCar president earlier this week following a cheating scandal at the Indianapolis 500. Cindric drives the No. 2 Ford Mustang for Penske in the NASCAR Cup Series and is currently 12th in the points standings with three top-10 finishes in 12 races, including a win at Talladega. Given the family ties with Team Penske it raised some speculation about how it might impact him. When asked if he was given assurances from Penske, Cindric said he didn’t think “it was even in question.”

U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau got a taste of speed on Saturday, roaring around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a two-seat IndyCar. It was the kind of thing that would have made the LIV Golf star nervous early in his career. But he says the success of his YouTube channel, which boasts nearly 2 million subscribers, has given him the confidence to do some outside-the-box things. Another one: Hitting tee shots off the Turn 2 terrace onto Brickyard Crossing, the golf course adjacent to the racetrack that winds four of its holes through the infield.

Trump administration releases people to shelters it threatened to prosecute for aiding migrants

The Trump administration has been releasing people charged with being in the country illegally to nongovernmental shelters along the U.S. border with Mexico after telling those organizations that providing migrants with temporary housing and other aid may violate a law used to prosecute smugglers. Border shelters have long provided lodging, meals and transportation to a bus station or airport. Many were rattled by a letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency demanding information in a wide-ranging investigation into potential migrant smuggling. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has continued releasing people to at least four shelters in Texas and Arizona.

Doubling down: Kyle Larson preps to run Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 after last year’s washout

Kyle Larson is doubling down on “The Double.” Larson is set to run both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, a task he set out to do last year but never had a chance to complete after weather disrupted the NASCAR star’s plans. A year ago rain delayed the start of the Indianapolis 500. That put Larson, who finished 18th after a pit lane speeding penalty, well behind schedule. He arrived in Concord 249 laps into the 400-lap Cup Series Race and was set to take over for replacement driver Justin Allgaier and finish the race. But lightning and heavy rains forced NASCAR to call the race early.

In their words: How recent presidents have honored America’s fallen on Memorial Day

From Arlington National Cemetery outside the nation’s capital to the American burial ground in Normandy, France, presidents customarily commemorate Memorial Day on hallowed ground. In somber wreath-laying ceremonies and poignant speeches, presidents remember the military members who died serving the country, even as many in the United States associate the holiday with a three-day weekend and shopping sales.

As Kyle Larson aims for ‘the Double,’ other IndyCar and NASCAR drivers ponder motorsports marathon

Kyle Larson will take another crack at “the Double” on Sunday by trying to complete every lap of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Tony Stewart is the only one to have pulled it off. But while attempts have been rare, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of drivers interested in it. Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden, Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin and reigning IndyCar series champion Alex Palou all expressed some desire to give it a try this week. It takes some serious financial support, the backing of teams in both IndyCar and NASCAR, logistical help, and plenty of luck.

Pirates ace Paul Skenes on the idea the last-place club should trade him: ‘Anybody can play GM’

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes says he’s not paying attention to the suggestion that the club should trade him. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year says he laughed when someone told him that someone asked Pirates general manager Ben Cherington if the club would consider moving on from Skenes to bolster its prospect pool. The 22-year-old Skenes says he brushed the speculation off, adding that ‘anybody can play GM.’ Cherington said trading Skenes is ‘not part of the conversation’ for the last-place club. Skenes is 3-5 with a 2.36 ERA in 11 starts this season for Pittsburgh and pitched six solid innings in what became a 6-5 victory over Milwaukee.

Richard Childress Racing has picked up the option on Kyle Busch’s contract, meaning the two-time Cup Series champion will be back with the team for the 2026 season. The 40-year-old Busch is in the midst of the longest slump of his career, with his losing streak closing in on 70 Cup Series races. Busch has won 63 Cup Series races since joining the circuit in 2003, but has not taken the checkered flag since June 4, 2023. Still, Busch believes RCR will get things turned around soon. The Democrats’ path back to power might start in places like this Appalachian town

Kentucky Democrats are trying to address the party’s steep deficits in overwhelmingly white, conservative pockets of rural America. A recent “Rural Listening Tour” stop by the state party leaders in a small Appalachian town reflected that challenge. It also showed they can have a presence everywhere. A generation ago, Democrat Bill Clinton won Kentucky twice, including pluralities in Johnson County, where Donald Trump won big in 2024. The state party chair, Colmon Elridge, says he’s committed to showing up in small-town Kentucky, and he points to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear as a model for Democrats to follow nationally in connecting with rural voters.

Some of Trump’s loyalty-first picks for prosecutors draw opposition from senators who can block them

Senate opposition led President Donald Trump to abandon his candidate to be the top prosecutor in the nation’s capital. But Trump is facing similar headwinds with some of his picks for U.S. attorneys elsewhere. The Republican president has put a premium on loyalty as he staffs his administration, and that can be seen as he works to name the 93 U.S. attorneys across the country. Some picks have drawn Senate pushback because of their politics and, in certain cases, lack of robust legal experience. Even though Democrats are in the minority in the Senate, they have considerable power to block Trump’s U.S. attorney nominees.

Ohtani to face hitters Sunday for 1st time in pitching rehab with Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to face hitters this weekend for the first time in his recovery from right elbow surgery. But after the Dodgers needed 13 innings to win 7-5 on Friday night in a rain-delayed game that ended about 1 a.m., manager Dave Roberts told reporters Ohtani decided to push back the session to Sunday because of the long, late night. It’s the next step for Ohtani as he works toward returning to the mound. He had right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023, and hasn’t pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23 that year for the Los Angeles Angels.
