San Diego plane crash is a devastating loss to the alternative rock music community

The alternative music community is in mourning after a private jet hit a power line in foggy weather early Thursday and crashed into a San Diego neighborhood. It slammed into a home and killed multiple people on the flight. Among them was the groundbreaking music executive Dave Shapiro, a pillar of his music scene, and Daniel Williams, a former drummer for the popular Ohio metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada. Both Williams and Shapiro served as success stories for their rock music scenes, proof that these subcultural sounds had real mainstream appeal, according to members of their community.

Arradondo, the city’s first Black police chief, told The Associated Press he also wishes he had done more to elevate the community voices demanding change. He recently published a book, “Chief Rondo: Securing Justice for the Murder of George Floyd.” He closes it with a letter to Floyd’s daughter, Gianna in which he says something she hasn’t heard from the former officers convicted in Floyd’s death: “I’m sorry.”

President Donald Trump is set to give the commencement address to West Point graduates

President Donald Trump is delivering his first military commencement address since returning to office. The Republican president is set to speak to West Point’s graduating class on Saturday morning. Trump gave the commencement address at West Point in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The president urged the graduating cadets to “never forget” the soldiers who fought a war over slavery during his remarks, which came as the nation was reckoning with its history on race after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Trump also paid tribute to the military academy’s history and its famed graduates, including Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

What keeps the safety director of the most vulnerable spot in US up at night before hurricane season

No place is more vulnerable to hurricanes in the 50 U.S. states than the Florida Keys. The chain of islands celebrated by singer Jimmy Buffett in his odes to tropical escapism is surrounded by water. The Gulf and Atlantic Ocean are on either side of the islands that jut out 120 miles southwesterly from Florida’s mainland. Making sure that members of the Conch Republic stay safe during hurricane season is Shannon Weiner. She is the director of emergency management for Monroe County, Florida. Hurricane season starts June 1. The county has some new weapons this season, including a brand-new emergency operations center and a new seawater desalination water treatment plant.

Trump says US Steel will keep HQ in Pittsburgh in a sign he’ll approve bid by Japan-based Nippon

President Donald Trump says U.S. Steel will keep its headquarters in Pittsburgh as part of what he called a “partnership” between the American steelmaker and Japan-based Nippon Steel, which sought to buy it. Trump’s statement Friday left it vague as to whether he’s approving Nippon Steel’s bid after vowing to block it, but investors took it as a positive sign, sharply pushing up U.S. Steel’s shares. The companies issued approving statements, but didn’t describe terms of the deal. Nippon Steel’s nearly $15 billion bid to buy U.S. Steel was blocked by former President Joe Biden. One union official suggests the federal government will have a role in the company’s management going forward.

Speaker Mike Johnson was rushing through the halls of the Capitol during the overnight House vote on President Donald Trump’s big tax bill. He paused for a question about his leadership style. And then he answered it with his own question: Have you seen the prayer room? He proceeded down the hall, punched in a keycode and opened up the door. “Been here a lot this week, right there on my knees,” he said. “Just praying.” The conservative Christian said he believes God has given him a chance to save the country, which he said he is trying to do. Democrats invoked the gospel, too, during debate, saying the bill’s steep cuts to Medicaid and food stamps are unconscionable.

Bruce Springsteen’s lyrical view of America has long included politics — even more so as he ages

Even as his fame and wealth have soared over the decades, Bruce Springsteen has retained the voice of the working class’ balladeer. He has often weighed in on politics — most notably when he was a regular presence on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. This month, though, his music and public statements have ended up as particularly pointed and contentious. At a concert in Manchester, England, Springsteen denounced President Donald Trump’s politics, calling him an “unfit president” leading a “rogue government” of people who have “no concern or idea for what it means to be deeply American.” His lyrics have long reflected his politics.

White House slashing staff in major overhaul of National Security Council, officials say

President Donald Trump is ordering a major overhaul of the National Security Council that will shrink its size, lead to the ouster of some political appointees and return many career government employees back to their home agencies. That’s according to two U.S. officials and one person familiar with the reorganization who requested anonymity to discuss the sensitive personnel matter. The officials say the number of staff at the NSC is expected to be significantly reduced. The shake-up is just the latest shoe to drop at the NSC, which is being dramatically made over after the ouster early this month of Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been serving as national security adviser.

President Donald Trump has signed executive orders to speed up the development of nuclear power and grant the energy secretary authority to approve advanced reactor designs and projects. The orders take authority away from the independent safety agency that has regulated the U.S. nuclear industry for decades. Friday’s orders would reorganize the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ensure quicker reviews of nuclear projects, including an 18-month deadline for the NRC to act on industry applications. The White House says there will be significant staff reductions at the NRC but they don’t intend to fire commissioners who head the agency. Critics say the moves could compromise safety and violate legal frameworks.

The resistant witnesses sometimes were fertile ground for defense lawyers to elicit testimony to support their claims that the acts they witnessed were proof of domestic violence rather than the federal charges he faces. Months after President Donald Trump called on his administration to cease penny production, the U.S. Mint announced this week that it had made its final order of penny blanks — and plans to stop making new 1-cent coins after those run out. Coin production costs vary thanks to different raw metals used, complexity of their designs, labor needed and more. Many of those expenses have been on the rise — and the penny isn’t the only coin entering our wallets today that costs more to make than it’s worth.

The government told Harvard’s thousands of current foreign students that they must transfer to other schools or they will lose their legal permission to be in the U.S. While Harvard can admit its own student body, the U.S. government has authority over who comes into the country. The government oversees which colleges can admit foreigners, who then apply for student visas. Students who completed their degrees this semester will be allowed to graduate. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s letter said the changes would take effect for the 2025-2026 school year.

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to carjack a car occupied by two U.S. Marshals Service deputies who were members of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s security detail. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon also sentenced Kentrell Flowers to five years of supervised release after his prison term. Around 1 a.m. on July 5, 2024, two deputies dressed in Marshals Service shirts were on duty in an unmarked government car when Flowers exited a minivan, approached the vehicle and pointed a loaded gun at one of the deputies through a window. The deputy fired four shots at Flowers, hitting him in the mouth.

Josef Newgarden fastest in final Indy 500 practice. Takuma Sato and other contenders have problems

Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden had the fastest lap of the 2-hour final practice on Carb Day at 225.687 mph. He will start from the back on Sunday as punishment for an illegal modified part that was found on the Team Penske cars of himself and Will Power. Two-time winner Takuma Sato, who will start in the middle of the first row, had some kind of mechanical problem during practice, as did Rahal Letterman Lanigan teammate Graham Rahal. Meanwhile, Ryan Hunter-Reay had to escape from his vehicle when fire erupted from the back of the No. 23 car late in the session.

What issues to watch as ‘big, beautiful bill’ moves to the Senate

House Republicans are jubilant about muscling through President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax and immigration package by a single vote. But across the Capitol, senators are more cautious. Senate Majority Leader John Thune can afford to lose three Republican senators and still pass the bill, and there are more than that who have problems with it. Like the House, he will have to balance the concerns from moderate and conservative members of his conference. Republicans’ aspirational deadline is July 4, ahead of a potential debt default. Thune said groups of senators had already been meeting to discuss the legislation.

A sold-out Indy 500 packed with drama, from firings to Larson’s double to Newgarden threepeat bid

The storylines are packed for this year’s Indianapolis 500.  Roger Penske fired the top three executives of his IndyCar team because the cars of two-time defending winner Josef Newgarden and Will Power failed inspection. The race is sold out for the first time since 2016. Robert Shwartzman is the first Israeli driver in the 33-driver field and the first rookie pole-winner since 1983. Newgarden will try to become the first driver to win three straight 500s. And  Kyle Larson will try again to complete the 500 and the 600-mile NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Vance says Trump will use US military decisively rather than in ‘open-ended conflicts’ of the past

Vice President JD Vance has told military academy graduates that President Donald Trump is working to ensure that U.S. armed forces are only sent into harm’s way with clear goals rather than the “open-ended conflicts” of the past. Vance told graduates at the United States Naval Academy that Trump’s approach means that if they are sent to war, it will be “with a very specific set of goals in mind.” Vance was making his first remarks as vice president to one of the nation’s military service academies.

Panthers sign Canadian singer Michael Buble — for a cancer fund-raising cause

The Florida Panthers have signed Canadian singer Michael Buble — for a good cause. Buble, a five-time Grammy-winning pop icon, has signed on to be part of the team’s fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society. The “Panthers on the Prowl” initiative combines art and philanthropy to support cancer research and patient services, and donors get the chance to sponsor life-sized panther sculptures that will be placed around South Florida. The program is the brainchild of Panthers hockey operations president and general manager Bill Zito and his wife Julie Zito.

Hurricanes’ Game 2 loss to Panthers offers an unwelcome repeat of conference-final history from ’23

The Carolina Hurricanes have found themselves in the same dire position in the conference-final rematch against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Carolina lost 5-0 on Thursday night to drop the second straight home game to open this series. It’s a rematch of the 2023 series won by Florida by four one-goal margins. But Carolina is struggling to consistently get to its game against a tested and deep roster. Carolina has lost 14 straight conference-final games going back to sweeps in 2009, 2019 and 2023. The past six have come against the Panthers, who host Game 3 on Saturday.
