RAPID CITY, S.D. — Youth and Family Services is inviting community members to help bring Christmas joy to local families through its annual holiday sponsorship program.
The program supports families who are actively working to improve their situation but may need extra help during the holiday season. Staff members at YFS identify families within their programs who could benefit from receiving gifts and a holiday meal, and then nominate them for sponsorship. For many of these families, the holidays can be overwhelming. Parents often carry a quiet worry about how they will make Christmas feel special for their children. This program gives them hope when they need it most.
A sponsorship covers gifts for the entire family along with a meal they can share together. YFS staff say the goal is to give every child the experience of waking up on Christmas morning to presents under the tree, while also making sure parents receive a gift of their own. For many parents, it may be the first Christmas gift they have received in years. Something as simple as being remembered can remind them that their community truly cares about them.
These families are not asking for luxury. They are wishing for the chance to sit at a table, share a meal, and experience the warmth of a holiday that feels whole. A small moment of joy can help parents feel renewed strength as they continue building a better future for their families.
The impact of the sponsorship program often extends far beyond the holidays. YFS says the weight it lifts off parents during a stressful time can be life changing. Many families who once relied on the program return later as sponsors themselves because of how deeply the experience touched them. The kindness they received becomes something they try to pass on, creating a ripple effect of generosity throughout the community.
A sponsorship for one family is 250 dollars. Every dollar goes directly toward gifts and a holiday meal. Sponsors can also choose to shop for the family themselves. YFS provides a list with details about each family and their gift wishes. Even one act of sponsorship can remind a struggling parent that they are not alone and that their community is cheering them on.
