Monday 5am Update – According to the South Dakota Department of Safety the fire is now 50% contained.
UPDATE AT 5pm – The South Department of safety reports there is no containment and fire is estimated at 58 acres.
CUSTER, S.D. – The Custer Volunteer Fire Department is responding to a wildland fire approximately 2 miles south of Custer, fire officials announced Sunday.
The blaze is located on the west side of Highway 385 S. Residents and travelers are being asked to stay out of the area to avoid interfering with heavy emergency vehicle traffic. The department noted that the safety of the public and the efficiency of the response depend on keeping the area clear of unnecessary traffic.
“Please STAY OUT OF THE AREA,” the Custer Volunteer Fire Department said in a notification. “Heavy emergency vehicle traffic will be in the area!”
The location of the fire is a critical point for those traveling through the southern Black Hills toward Rapid City. No structures have been reported as threatened at this time, but crews are working to secure a perimeter.
