UPDATE: Livestock On The Loose After Semi Truck Accident Near Sturgis

UPDATE 7:28PM – Traffic on Interstate 90 faced significant disruptions Friday afternoon following a semi truck accident that released a herd of cattle onto the roadway between Sturgis and Spearfish.

The incident occurred when a commercial vehicle transporting livestock veered off the interstate. The impact caused the trailer to breach, allowing several cows to escape and run along the shoulder and active travel lanes.

Motorists in the area reported hazardous driving conditions as animals scattered up to a half mile from the initial crash site. One witness described having to brake sharply well past the accident scene when a calf darted across the interstate.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the report. One individual, believed to be the driver of the semi truck, was treated by paramedics and transported from the scene via stretcher. The extent of their injuries and the current condition of the driver have not been released by officials.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
