RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City family and their pets escaped unharmed early Thursday morning after a fire broke out in their garage and began spreading into their home.
Rapid City Fire Department crews were dispatched at approximately 1:30 a.m. to the 200 block of Viking Drive, located approximately two miles north of I-90 and Haines, following reports of a structure fire. According to fire officials, the homeowners were inside the residence when they noticed the smell of smoke and heard unusual noises. Upon investigation, they discovered a fire in the garage that was starting to move into the main living area.
All occupants successfully evacuated the building before emergency responders arrived on the scene. While battling the blaze, firefighters located two pet birds inside the home. Crews were able to shelter the birds in place until interior conditions improved, at which point they were safely removed from the residence.
Firefighters contained the fire to the garage and the immediate extension area. No injuries to residents or emergency personnel were reported.
The cause of the fire in Rapid City remains under investigation by local authorities.
