RAPID CITY, S.D. – Local officials have issued a mandatory ban on open burning in Pennington County on Tuesday as the Grassland Fire Danger Index reached a very high rating.

The National Weather Service current assessment for the region indicates that atmospheric conditions and fuel moisture levels have created an environment where wildfires could ignite easily and spread rapidly. Under the very high classification, residents are prohibited from engaging in any open burning activities. This includes burn piles, slash burning, and any fires not fully enclosed within a chimney or a duct stack.

In addition this Thursday and Friday there is a probability of wind gusts in excess of 60mph.

Local law enforcement and fire officials reminded the public that violations of the burn ban carry significant penalties. Individuals found in non-compliance may face a fine of $500 or up to 30 days in jail.

Public safety officials in Rapid City and surrounding areas are asking residents to take extra precautions to prevent accidental ignitions. Safety recommendations include avoiding outdoor burning of any kind, ensuring cigarettes are never discarded from vehicles, and refraining from driving or parking vehicles over dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can easily start a fire.
