RAPID CITY, SD — What began as a neighbor’s idea to bring joy, has lit up and grown into a rather large spectacle at night. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood on Saint Cloud St. between Mt. Rushmore Rd. and West Blvd, residents have put up several 30-ft. inflatable Christmas decorations, turning this quiet street into an oversized and wonderfully colorful winter wonderland. It’s a brightly lit, little gem this holiday season that needs to be added onto your holiday lights driving tour checklist.
Beyond the visual spectacle, the Saint Cloud Santas represent something deeper; the power of joy. This hasn’t been the easiest year for Kari Kadrmas, the visionary behind Santa Street and resident on Saint Cloud St. Her husband has been in a long battle with cancer, but that wasn’t going to stop her from enjoying the holidays and spreading a little Christmas cheer in their neighborhood. She put her plan in motion, buying the inflatables, enlisting her neighbors, and staging a surprise for her husband’s return home for the holidays. As they rounded the corner to the familiar street, he was greeted by a parade of inflatables and the warm welcome of home. In that moment, the glowing santas stood not just as decorations, but as symbols of love, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of a community united in hope this winter.
“One is corny, but ten is silly” said Kari, when asked for her reasoning behind the multitudes of inflatables that would make even Scrooge himself smile. Kari set out to surprise her husband with a little Christmas joy, however this simple act has brought happiness to families all over the Rapid City area. A visual reminder that life is full of joy and that it’s worth celebrating. So while you’re taking a drive this holiday season, looking at the lights all over town, be merry, spread cheer, drive safely, and if you need a smile, take a stroll down Santa Street on Saint Cloud.
