Rapid City Voters Reject Destination District TIF in Special Election
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Unofficial results show Rapid City voters rejected the Destination District TIF that would have paved the way for Libertyland in a special election held yesterday. The unofficial final vote count showed 7,965 votes against the TIF and 3,415 votes in favor. Had voters approved it, the Destination District TIF would have helped fund infrastructure for the proposed entertainment venue Libertyland and a sports complex. The issue was sent to a public vote after opponents gathered enough signatures to set up a special election. Officials say voter interest was high leading up to election day, with nearly 7% of registered voters casting absentee ballots. (Full Story)

Bills Advancing in Pierre Aim to Address Rural Ambulance Staffing Shortages
PIERRE, S.D. — Two bills aimed at strengthening South Dakota’s emergency medical services moved forward Tuesday, as lawmakers pointed to ongoing staffing challenges for rural ambulance crews. House Bill 1023, as amended, would allow registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to serve on ambulance crews under state law and provides liability protection when they act within their training. Rep. Tim Walburg of Madison said the bill clears up confusion that has left nurses uncertain about their role. A second measure, House Bill 1024, as amended, changes how ambulance drivers are trained and certified. Supporters say earlier state-level requirements made it harder for volunteers to help. Both bills passed the committee unanimously and now head to the House floor. (Full Story)
Federal Prosecutors Issue Subpoenas to Minnesota Officials Over Immigration Enforcement Probe
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas to multiple Minnesota officials as part of an investigation into whether state and local leaders obstructed or impeded federal immigration enforcement during a large-scale operation in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, according to a person familiar with the matter. The subpoenas seek records from the offices of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and officials in Ramsey and Hennepin counties. The investigation is examining whether public statements or actions by officials interfered with immigration enforcement and could involve a potential conspiracy statute. The subpoenas follow weeks of heightened federal immigration activity in the Twin Cities, during which federal officials report thousands of arrests, and come as legal challenges related to the enforcement surge remain pending in federal court.
