ACLU of South Dakota Raises Concerns Over HB 1257’s Broader Implications
PIERRE, S.D. — The American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota is opposing House Bill 1257, which supporters say would clarify the “medical emergency” exception to the state’s near-total abortion ban, arguing the bill could have wider legal effects beyond abortion care. In a statement, the organization said the bill’s definition of an “unborn child” from fertilization to live birth could impact access to hormonal contraception, emergency contraception and in vitro fertilization, and warned that medical emergency exceptions are often narrow and insufficient to address life-threatening situations. The ACLU also said laws should remain neutral toward differing beliefs about when life begins to ensure equal protection under the law as the bill moves through the Legislature. (Full Story)
US shoots down Iranian drone that ‘aggressively’ approached an aircraft carrier, military says
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says talks between special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials are still planned after a Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that was approaching a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea. U.S. Central Command said Tuesday the drone “aggressively approached” the aircraft carrier and kept flying toward it “despite de-escalatory measures taken by U.S. forces.” The U.S. military says the shootdown occurred within hours of another incident in which Iranian forces harassed a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s president says he’s instructed his foreign minister to pursue fair negotiations with the U.S. The White House says President Donald Trump wants to ”pursue diplomacy first.” (Full Story)

The leaders said they discussed drug trafficking, and Petro invited his U.S. counterpart to visit Colombia. (Full Story)
