22-Year-Old Woman Identified in Fatal Rapid City Crash After Fleeing Traffic Stop
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Authorities have identified a 22-year-old female killed in a crash in Rapid City last week. The crash happened after a Jeep Liberty fled a traffic stop, and collided with a Ford pickup truck at the intersection of North Cherry Avenue and East North Street. Police say Mia Lane Carpio was a passenger in the Jeep and died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Jeep, identified as 30-year-old Torry Ray Ghost Bear of Rapid City, received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Charges are pending against him. In all, five people were in the Jeep. The driver of the pickup truck received minor injuries in the crash.
Silver Mountain Fire Now 100 Percent Contained Near Rockerville
ROCKERVILLE, S.D. — The Rockerville Fire Department says the Silver Mountain Fire burning a couple of miles south of Rockerville is now 100 percent contained. The blaze broke out last Wednesday just off Highway 16 and grew to 68 acres in size. The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation. The Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department said people have been asking if it’s safe to use local trails. Officials confirmed the Flume Trail, the Silver Mountain Trail and trails in the Boulder Hill area are open. The department asked people to steer clear of trails between Silver Mountain and Highway 16 to protect themselves as well as fire crews. (Full Story)
Laura Armstrong Announces Campaign to Return to Rapid City Council
RAPID CITY, S.D. — In politics, one-time Rapid City Councilwoman Laura Armstrong says she would like to again serve on the council. In a release, Armstrong announced her campaign, hoping to represent Ward 5. Armstrong originally served from 2017 to 2023 in Ward 5. She lost the mayoral race to Jason Salamun in 2023, before stepping back from Rapid City politics until now. Ward 5 covers the Western and Southwestern portion of Rapid City, and Rod Pettigrew is the current incumbent in Ward 5. Since 2023 Armstrong has been working as a speech pathologist at Black Hills Speech Pathology.
South Dakota Flu Deaths Climb to 14 as Cases Remain Widespread
PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Health Departments says the number of people who’ve died in the state from influenza this season has risen to 14. That includes four new deaths over the past week. They say the geographic spread of the flu is widespread, and that influenza activity is moderate. Minnehaha County has seen the most flu deaths with six, followed by Lincoln and Hughes counties with two apiece, and one each in the counties of Brown, Fall River, Marshall and Meade. There were 45 new flu-related hospitalizations in the past week.
Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigators work with Walmart after identifying suspect’s backpack
Investigators working on the disappearance of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother are consulting with Walmart management to develop leads. That’s because a backpack the suspect was wearing is sold exclusively at Walmart stores. Chris Nanos, the sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, told The Associated Press in a text message on Monday that the suspect’s “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” is the only clothing item that has been “definitively identified.” Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Arizona home on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day. The Federal Bureau of Investigation released surveillance videos of a masked person wearing a handgun holster outside Guthrie’s front door the night she vanished. (Full Story)
US troops arrive in Nigeria to help train its military, Nigerian military says
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Nigerian military says about 100 U.S. troops plus equipment have arrived in Nigeria to help train soldiers in the West African country. The arrival followed a request by the Nigerian government to the U.S government to for training, technical support intelligence-sharing, the military said in a statement Monday. The deployment follows an easing of tensions that had flared between the U.S. and Nigeria when U.S. President Donald Trump had issued threats against Nigeria over allegations that the government was not protecting its Christian citizens. Robert Duvall, Oscar-winning actor and ‘Godfather’ mainstay, dead at 95
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor whose classic roles included the wily confidant of the first two “Godfather” movies, has died at age 95. He first gained notice for a small part as the reclusive neighbor in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” He won an Academy Award as best actor for portraying the over-the-hill country music singer in the 1983 film “Tender Mercies.” He also won four Golden Globes, including one for playing the philosophical cattle-drive boss in the 1989 miniseries “Lonesome Dove,” a role he often cited as his favorite.
