Police Say Ammunition Found in Backpack Linked Suspect to UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

NEW YORK (AP) — Police in Pennsylvania testified Monday that a loaded gun magazine found in Luigi Mangione’s backpack during his Dec. 9, 2024, arrest led them to identify him as the suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Officers discovered the ammunition while searching the bag at a McDonald’s in Altoona, where Mangione was detained on forgery and false identification charges. Prosecutors say the items found in the backpack — including a 9 mm handgun, silencer and notebook — connect Mangione to Thompson’s killing five days earlier in Manhattan. Mangione’s attorneys argue the warrantless search was improper and are seeking to block the evidence, while prosecutors maintain the search followed police protocol and was later validated by a judge’s warrant. Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty in both state and federal cases, where prosecutors allege the gun matches the murder weapon and say writings in the notebook referenced targeting a CEO.

Judge Orders Release of Immigrant Tied to White House Press Secretary

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — An immigration judge on Monday ordered the release of Bruna Ferreira, a 33-year-old Brazilian woman with family ties to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, while she continues to fight possible deportation. Ferreira, a longtime Massachusetts resident and former fiancée of Leavitt’s brother, was arrested by ICE agents in Revere, Massachusetts, on Nov. 12 as she drove to pick up her son. She was transferred to a Louisiana detention center, where the judge granted her release on $1,500 bond after both sides agreed she was neither a danger nor a flight risk. The Department of Homeland Security described Ferreira as a “criminal illegal alien,” referencing a battery arrest that her attorney disputed. Ferreira, who entered the U.S. as a toddler and previously received DACA protections, will be required to check in regularly with ICE while her case proceeds.

Where Peace Talks on the Ukraine War Currently Stand

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has launched its most intense diplomatic push yet to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine, but negotiations remain stalled as Russia and Ukraine hold firm to opposing demands. U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and later held talks with Ukrainian officials in Florida in an effort to narrow gaps in a plan critics say favors Moscow. Russia wants international recognition of its control over occupied areas in four Ukrainian regions, as well as Crimea, and insists Ukraine abandon its NATO ambitions and scale back its military. Ukraine has rejected ceding territory, though it has said it would halt fighting along current front lines, and continues to seek security guarantees from the U.S. and Europe. Both sides accuse the other of slowing negotiations, and Trump signaled frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while Putin said parts of the U.S. plan remain unacceptable.
