200 Acre Fire Burns Near Keystone, Evacuations Issued

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Firefighters were battling a 200 acre fire north of Highway 40 about 2 miles east of Keystone overnight. Numerous resources were on scene as the fire was burning in a mixture of grass of timber with winds pushing the fire north and east. There were several homes put on a set evacuation notice along Highway 40 between Playhouse Road and Rushmore Ranch Road. A Set evacuation means homeowners should be ready to go at a moment’s notice. The Keystone Community Center was open and staffed Wednesday night for anyone affected by the fire or in the Set area.


Firefighters Stop Forward Progress of Skyline Drive Fires

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Firefighters have halted the forward progress of multiple fires that broke out along Skyline Drive. The Rapid City Fire Department reported that the incident began after 1:30 p.m. While initial reports indicated three separate fires, officials stated the number was reduced to two after two of the blazes merged. Emergency responders encountered downed power lines in the area, and officials are investigating a possible transformer explosion as the potential cause.


Pennington County Jury Convicts Pam White Butterfly of Murder and Attempted Murder

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Pennington County jury has convicted Pam White Butterfly of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in a February shooting that left one man dead and his brother critically wounded. White Butterfly, 30, was found guilty in the killing of 68-year-old Lenart Brown Eyes and the shooting of his brother, Gerard Brown Eyes, 66, at a home on East New York Street in north Rapid City on Feb. 23, 2025. Prosecutors said White Butterfly shot Lenart Brown Eyes twice, including a round that severed a major artery in his arm and proved fatal. Gerard Brown Eyes was also shot twice during the incident, including once in the head, and survived despite life-threatening injuries.


Health Officials Warn of Possible Measles Exposure at Rapid City Regional Airport

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Health is notifying the public of a potential measles exposure at Rapid City Regional Airport in Rapid City. A Butte County resident with a confirmed measles infection was present at the airport while infectious. Anyone who was at the location on December 10 from the hours of 10:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. may have been exposed to measles and should self-monitor for symptoms for 21 days following the exposure date December 17 to December 31. People who are not immune to measles should contact their healthcare provider to discuss protective options, including vaccination or immune globulin, depending on eligibility and timing.


Pennington County Commission Approves 2026 Funding for Rapid City Public Library

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City officials commended the Pennington County Commission’s Tuesday decision to provide $320,000 to the Rapid City Public Library for 2026. The Commission’s vote authorizes library services to county residents for the next year. Library Director Terri Davis says the Commission’s funding will allow for the continuation of Sunday library services, which was an issue of primary concern for library users. Davis also said the library will not charge user fees to county residents who pay into the library levy. She said some collections and library services will be reduced, although specific reductions have not been determined.


Rapid City Council Approves New Regulations for Vacation Homes

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Council has approved second reading of an ordinance that establishes new regulations for vacation homes. The ordinance defines a vacation home as a residence rented for less than 28 consecutive days and more than 14 days a calendar year where no owner or manager is present. Under the new rules, rentals must meet specific parking requirements and occupancy limits, capped at two people per bedroom plus two additional guests. Starting January 30, operators of short-term rentals will need to register with the city to ensure compliance.


Investigators seek older video that might show the Brown campus shooter days before the attack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are asking the public to review any security or phone footage from the week before the mass shooting at Brown University in the hopes it might help investigators identify someone they believe might have been casing the scene before the attack. With the search for the shooter in its fifth day Wednesday, the city of Providence is on edge, with investigators showing no sign that they’re close to figuring out who was behind Saturday’s attack that killed two students and wounded nine others. The request to review older video came after authorities released several clips from the day of the attack. In all of those, the person authorities are trying to identify was masked or had their head turned. (Full Story)

The Oscars will move to YouTube in 2029, leaving longtime home of ABC

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a major change for the Oscars. Starting in 2029, the awards ceremony will stream on YouTube. ABC will continue broadcasting the event until 2028, which will mark the 100th Oscars. This shift announced Wednesday represents a significant move for one of television’s marquee events. Starting in 2029, YouTube will retain global rights to streaming the Oscars through 2033. YouTube will effectively be the home to all things Oscars, including red-carpet coverage, the Governors Awards and the Oscar nominations announcement. (Full Story)
