Because every restaurant is more than just what’s on the plate

Gluten-free and dairy-free places can sometimes feel like you’re walking into a compromise. What will be missing? What’s the texture going to be like? But stepping into Nanna’s Café in downtown Rapid City doesn’t feel like you’re losing anything. It feels like a café that just happens to serve food without gluten or dairy, not a place built around restriction. And for someone like me, who can eat anything, that’s a refreshing surprise.
Nanna’s Café & Bread Company sits just across from Main Street Square. It’s a charming space that blends small-town hospitality with a kind of quiet confidence. When you walk in, seating lines the right-hand side and a good-sized bakery case greets you on the left, filled with house-baked breads, donuts, and caramel rolls. The vibe is cozy and relaxed, with piano music playing softly over the speakers and big windows offering a clean view of downtown.
We arrived right at opening on a cold and windy Saturday morning and were greeted warmly right away. The first thing they brought out was hot coffee for me and a tea basket for Victoria to choose from. She doesn’t usually go for tea, but the chill in the air made it too tempting to pass up.
After soaking in the atmosphere for a bit, you start to smell the bread baking, either just going in or just coming out of the oven. That smell alone is worth the visit. It feels like something you’d find in a quiet suburb of a bigger city like Minneapolis or St. Paul, which makes it feel even more special here.
We decided to try their breakfast options. I ordered the breakfast sandwich made with their house-made honey white bread, sausage, and American cheese, served with a fruit cup. Victoria went with the cinnamon roll breakfast, which came with a gooey iced cinnamon roll (sweetened with honey), over-medium eggs, bacon, and a fruit cup.
To round things out, I asked them to pick two donuts they were most proud of so I could try them without bias. They brought out a maple glazed donut and one that reminded me of an apple fritter. Both were thick, aromatic, and arrived warm. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a gluten-free donut, but they nailed the texture, dense, crisp on the outside, and full of flavor. If you handed me one without telling me it was gluten-free, I never would’ve guessed. That has to be an incredible thing for people who typically can’t enjoy something like this. For a moment, everything just feels normal.

The breakfast sandwich was the size of a burger. The sausage was crisp, the bread had a light crunch on the outside with a soft center, and the fruit cup was fresh and colorful. Honestly, one of the better fruit cups I’ve had anywhere.
As we finished up, we chatted briefly with the owner’s husband. Both he and his wife are from California. She was a teacher, he was in IT, and they didn’t set out to start a business. They just loved baking bread. One thing led to another, and here they are, running a café in South Dakota that’s completely gluten and dairy free, serving food that could go toe to toe with any other café in town.
Victoria’s Take:
I can eat gluten, so I wasn’t walking in with any expectations or dietary restrictions. But everything we had really delivered. The cinnamon roll breakfast came with over-medium eggs, bacon, and a fruit cup. The bacon was cooked just the way I like it, perfectly crispy without going overboard. The roll was hot, gooey, and sweet without being cloying. I’d absolutely come back to try more, especially the pizzas. It’s not just “good for gluten-free”, it’s just good.
Wrap-Up:
Gluten-free or not, Nanna’s Café is worth a visit. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy a quiet meal, and leave feeling like you’ve discovered a hidden gem in downtown Rapid City. And whether you have dietary needs or just appreciate good food, it’s clear this spot was built with a lot of heart.
Bathroom Check:
Easy to find and well maintained for an older downtown building, exactly what you want when you need it. Clean, simple, and no surprises.
