The Education Department is opening fewer sexual violence investigations as Trump dismantles it
The Education Department is opening fewer sexual violence investigations at schools and universities. The Office for Civil Rights enforced these cases but has been cut by President Donald Trump, leaving fewer lawyers to manage 25,000 complaints. Since last year’s layoffs, investigations into allegations schools mishandled sexual assault complaints have dropped dramatically. Meanwhile, Trump’s Republican administration has increased investigations into schools that make accommodations for transgender students, alleging gender discrimination. Even before the layoffs, there were complaints the office moved too slowly on cases. Now, some law firms have stopped filing complaints, calling it a dead end. The Education Department says the office is working through its caseload.
