Some Native Americans draw shocked response over contract to design immigration detention centers

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation that was uprooted from the Great Lakes region in the 1830s is facing widespread outrage over plans to profit from another forced removal. Fellow Native Americans are criticizing the tribe for a contract tied to President Donald Trump’s campaign of mass deportation. A newly established tribal business entity quietly signed a nearly $30 million federal contract in October to design immigrant detention centers. Tribal leaders and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security haven’t responded to questions about why the tribe did not have to compete for the work as federal contracting normally requires. Amid the backlash, the chairman of the tribe says it’s trying to get out of the contract.
