Suspect in murder of Oakland coach from ‘Last Chance U’ makes first court appearance
A 27-year-old man charged with the murder of former Oakland community college football coach John Beam has made an initial court appearance. Cedric Irving Jr. did not enter a plea during his first court appearance on Tuesday. The Alameda County district attorney says he could face 50 years to life in prison if convicted of murder and a related firearm charge. The 66-year-old Beam was a beloved figure in the community and was featured in the Netflix docuseries “Last Chance U.” He was shot at Laney College on Thursday and died the next day. Irving was arrested Friday and, officials say, admitted to the shooting.
