Packers add former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as defensive coordinator

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon is joining the Green Bay Packers’ staff as defensive coordinator. Coach Matt LaFleur announced the hire of Gannon on Monday. The Packers were seeking a new defensive coordinator after Jeff Hafley left to become the Miami Dolphins head coach. Gannon went 15-36 in three years at Arizona. He previously spent two seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator. The Eagles had a franchise-record 70 sacks and reached the Super Bowl during Gannon’s final season in Philadelphia.

Packers’ Trevon Diggs wants to make the most of his unexpected playoff opportunity

Trevon Diggs couldn’t have imagined a couple of weeks ago that he’d have a chance to make an impact in the playoffs. The 27-year-old cornerback finds himself in this improbable position after the Green Bay Packers claimed him off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys last week. Diggs performed capably while playing nearly half of Green Bay’s defensive snaps in its regular-season finale Sunday. Packers coach Matt LaFleur didn’t rule out the possibility of starting him in their Saturday night wild-card matchup at Chicago.

Packers to start QB Clayton Tune in regular-season finale at Minnesota

Clayton Tune will start at quarterback for Green Bay in its regular-season finale Sunday at Minnesota with the Packers intending to rest Jordan Love as he prepares for the playoffs. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday that Love has cleared concussion protocol but isn’t expected to play against the Vikings (8-8). Green Bay (9-6-1) already is locked into the NFC’s No. 7 playoff seed. Love hasn’t played since taking a helmet-to-helmet hit in the second quarter of a 22-16 overtime loss at Chicago on Dec. 20.

Packers’ Malik Willis downplays his shoulder issue after delivering huge performance in loss

Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis characterized the shoulder injury that caused him to head to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter Saturday as nothing more than a “tweak.” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Willis could have reentered the game if necessary. The Packers instead opted to keep Willis on the sidelines after Baltimore’s Derrick Henry scored a game-clinching touchdown with less than two minutes left in the Baltimore Ravens’ 41-24 victory. Willis had performed brilliantly while starting in place of the injured Jordan Love.

Packers running back Emanuel Wilson joins Josh Jacobs on injured report

The Green Bay Packers are unsure about the availability of either of their top two running backs for Sunday’s game at Denver. Green Bay added Emanuel Wilson to its injury report Saturday because of an illness and labeled him questionable. Josh Jacobs already had been listed as questionable Friday with a knee issue. Jacobs didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. He did practice on a limited basis Friday. The NFC North-leading Packers will be seeking their fifth straight victory Sunday when they visit the AFC West-leading Broncos. Denver has won 10 straight games.

Packers dealing with unexpected adversity as they prepare to host Eagles

The Green Bay Packers have cause for concern as they spend this week preparing for a Monday night matchup with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Green Bay still leads the NFC North, but it has reason to worry about an offense that couldn’t finish drives in Sunday’s 16-13 loss to Carolina. It also has to find a way to replace tight end Tucker Kraft, who will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Packers believe weekend film studies at Kenny Clark’s home may produce more consistent pass rush

Kenny Clark is hosting his fellow Green Bay Packers pass rushers for weekend offseason gatherings in hopes of producing more frequent get-togethers in opposing backfields each Sunday this fall. The three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman realizes Green Bay’s pass rush can’t afford a repeat of its inconsistent 2024 performance. That’s why Green Bay’s pass rushers have been conducting regular offseason film sessions at Clark’s home. Green Bay collected 45 sacks last season to tie for eighth place among all NFL teams. But more than half of those sacks came in just four games.
