Rhode Island firefighters rescue a yellow Lab from an icy pond on New Year’s Day
Firefighters in Rhode Island rescued a yellow Labrador named Phoenix on New Year’s Day after he fell through an ice-covered pond. The Misquamicut Fire Department reports that volunteer firefighters and emergency officials were dispatched early Thursday morning for the water rescue. Phoenix was struggling in the icy water when firefighters arrived. Members from the Misquamicut and Watch Hill fire departments donned ice rescue suits to save him. Both Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore. The fire departments declared it “a successful first call of 2026” and reminded the public that no ice is ever safe.
