24 endangered sea turtles recovering in Florida after cold stunning off Cape Cod
Two dozen Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are rehabilitating in Florida after cold waters off Cape Cod left them with frostbite and pneumonia. They arrived at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center on Dec. 9, thanks to the nonprofit LightHawk. The turtles are expected to stay until spring before being released into the Atlantic Ocean. Heather Barron from Loggerhead says they suffer from a condition called cold stunning, which requires antibiotics and fluids. The turtles migrate north in summer and often get stuck in Cape Cod. The New England Aquarium has treated 472 hypothermic turtles since Nov. 7.
