RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities in Rapid City, South Dakota, have launched an investigation into a suspicious death following the discovery of a body Monday afternoon.
At approximately 4:35 p.m. on Jan. 26, police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of E. North Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, law enforcement located the man within an improvised outdoor encampment set up near the railroad tracks.
Police determined the male was deceased at the scene. According to the Rapid City Police Department, observable injuries were present, leading investigators to classify the death as suspicious in nature. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the specific cause of death. The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
