Suspect in custody following shots fired at apartment complex

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police arrested a 19-year-old man Saturday after shots were fired into an apartment building in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Tristin Black Elk, of Rapid City, faces charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, discharge of a firearm at a structure and two counts of aggravated assault. He is currently being held at the Pennington County Jail.

Officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots in the 700 block of East Anamosa Street around 11:35 a.m. Saturday, January 24th. Upon arrival, police discovered shell casings and bullet holes in one of the apartment buildings. Authorities reported no injuries resulted from the incident.

After interviewing witnesses, investigators identified Black Elk as the suspect.

Later that afternoon, at approximately 3:30 p.m., law enforcement received a report of a man carrying a handgun in the 1700 block of North 7th Street. Officers arrived on the scene and attempted to contact the individual, later confirmed to be Black Elk.

Police said Black Elk fled on foot but was apprehended and taken into custody shortly after.
