STURGIS, SD / RAPID CITY, SD – The Sturgis Scooper girls used a 17-0 run between the second and third quarters to pull away and put away the Belle Fourche Broncs, 45-25 at West Gym in Sturgis on Tuesday night. The Scooper boys traveled to Rapid City to take on St. Thomas More and dropped their third straight game, 62-34 to the Cavaliers.

The Belle Fourche girls took a 6-5 lead after the first quarter and led 11-9 midway through the second, then went on a scoring drought until 3:45 left in the third quarter. The 17-0 run by the Scoopers gave them a 26-11 advantage, a lead that they never relinquished. Sturgis outscored the Broncs 12-9 in the third quarter and 15-5 in the fourth to earn the 45-25 victory.

“I think our bench gave us a huge spark there in the first and second quarter, and really kind of helped break some things loose,” said Scooper head coach Courtney Pool. “Hadlee Parsons hasn’t played in a varsity game, I don’t think, other than when we’re beating somebody or getting beat, so she gave us big minutes, I thought. And I thought Brilee (Heath) and Kynlee (Stewart) and Arina (Haugen) coming in off the bench kind of gave us a little spark, and then we kind of loosened up a little bit. We’re capable of playing even better than that, so hopefully we’ll figure out how to how to get that done this weekend against Mitchell and Huron, and Spearfish next week.”

Sturgis improved to 4-9 on the season and were led by Addy Kossler with 16 points, including two three-pointers. Leigha Long added 13 points and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The Scoopers shot 17-of-51 from the field (33%), 9-of-10 from the charity stripe (90%), had 16 turnovers and 29 rebounds. Kierra Killinger and Haugen contributed 7 rebounds each.

Belle Fourche dropped to 4-11 on the year and were led by Reagan Hatling with seven points. Denali Larson and Ansley O’Brien chipped in five points apiece. The Broncs shot 11-of-43 from the field (25%), made 1-of-7 free throws (14%), committed 24 turnovers and had 24 rebounds. Mya Nowowiejski grabbed six rebounds for Belle Fourche.

No statistics were available for the Sturgis / St. Thomas More boys contest.

The Scooper boys and girls are in action next on Friday night, as they host the Mitchell Kernels. Girls tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
