Sturgis City Council announces applicant pool for City Administrator position

STURGIS, S.D. – The City of Sturgis has officially closed its application period for the City Administrator position, attracting a total of 10 applicants, said Acting Mayor Kevin Forrester.

Despite two incomplete applications, the council expressed satisfaction with the pool of candidates.

“The caliber of applicants is encouraging, and we are eager to move forward with the selection process,” said Forrester.

The City Council will deliberate on the applications during their upcoming meeting on Jan. 6, with plans to narrow down the candidate list.

This hiring initiative follows a significant change in the city’s governance structure. After the departure of former City Manager Daniel Ainslie in April 2023, Sturgis residents voted to change the government format, moving from an aldermanic system with a city manager to one without.

The subsequent adoption of Title 7 ordinance paved the way for the creation of the City Administrator role, reflecting the council’s vision for administrative leadership.

Councilor Tony Dargatz emphasized the urgency of the process in November when the council voted to open the City Administrator position, stating, “The sooner the better we get that position filled.”

Councilor Jim Thompson proposed a salary range between $130,000 to $145,000, based on qualifications and experience. “We believe this range will attract a competent leader, allowing room for negotiation to secure the right candidate,” Thompson added.

The city sought experienced leaders with a strong emphasis on candidates possessing a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. This new position aims to enhance operational efficiency and leadership within the municipal structure of Sturgis, Forrester said.
