
STURGIS, S.D. – At the State A wrestling tournament, it was a very successful first round for the heavy favorite Sturgis Scoopers.
Sturgis advanced 13 of 14 wrestler to the quarterfinal matches.
Scooper wrestlers winning their first-round matches include Sullivan Sigman at 106, Tyler Dunn at 113, Tyler Baldwin at 120, Tarver Zebroski at 120, Parker Graveman at 132, Mason Hagen at 138, Josiah Drummer at 144, Ben Nadig at 150, Jace Thurman at 157, Gavin Werlinger at 175, Kelson Dirk at 190, Zhoel Irion at 215 and Tyce Uherka at 285.
Evan Juelfs lost his first-round matchup with G. Deesltra of Sioux Falls Lincoln, who won a hard-fought match 4-2.
For the Scooper girls, winning their opening matches were Jenika Leonhardt at 100, Annalee Pierson at 110, Kaidnyce Hand at 115, Brooklyn Baird at 135 and Murielle Hagen at 190.
Sturgis leads the team standings with 44 points. Watertown is second with 33 and Aberdeen Central is third with 30 points. Brandon Valley is fourth one point behind.
In the girls standings, Canton leads with 36 points followed by Spearfish and Watertown tied for second with 24. Sturgis is fourth with 23.
At the State B Tournament, Canton leads the team standings with Tri-Valley is second and Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes in third. The Badlands Brawlers are in 7th.
The Brawlers, also known as Philip/Wall/Kadoka Area, advanced six wrestlers to the quarterfinals, including Cannin Snyder at 113, Gatlin Cordes at 120, Shay Weber at 126, Oakley Menzel at 165, Ethan Harris at 190 and Patrick Trask at 215.
