PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden has ordered flags at the South Dakota State Capitol to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, to honor the life and service of former state legislator Harvey Krautschun.
Krautschun, a Republican from Spearfish, served in the South Dakota State House of Representatives for 12 years, spanning from 1985 to 1996. He concluded his legislative tenure by serving as the Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1996.
Known for his booming voice and leadership, Krautschun represented Lawrence County and remained a prominent figure in the Black Hills region after his time in Pierre. He was a graduate of Black Hills State University and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Outside of public office, he was a local business owner and active community member in the Spearfish and Rapid City areas.
Krautschun passed away on Jan. 1, 2026, at the age of 76.
A funeral service for the former speaker is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. MT on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.
