UPDATE AT 7pm February 15 – The Rockerville Volunteer fire department reports the Sliver Mountain Fire is contained.

ROCKERVILLE – Firefighters have reached 75 percent containment on the Silver Mountain Fire as of Friday morning, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The wildfire, located approximately two miles south of Rockerville and about 12 miles from Rapid City, has been held at 67 acres. State, federal, and local crews have successfully established a perimeter around the blaze, which was first reported Wednesday morning.

While forward progress has been halted, fire officials stated that South Dakota Wildland Fire and the U.S. Forest Service will remain on the scene through the weekend. Personnel are focused on extinguishing hot spots and monitoring stump holes that continue to smolder within the fire lines.

Motorists traveling on Highway 16 near the Silver Mountain Road intersection have been advised to use caution. Although no roads are closed and no evacuations are in place, smoke remains visible in the area. A northwest breeze on Friday morning has continued to push light smoke toward Highway 16 and nearby residential roads.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by state officials. Local volunteer fire departments from the surrounding Rapid City area have assisted in the suppression efforts since the initial report.
