Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandwater says on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Meade County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting an accident in the parking lot of Sturgis High School. The caller advised that multiple juveniles were involved, several with minor injuries, and that one individual was trapped beneath a vehicle and unresponsive.
Officers and deputies responded immediately, extricated the patient, and initiated lifesaving measures until Sturgis Ambulance arrived. The patient was transported to Sturgis Hospital and later airlifted to Rapid City
hospital via LifeFlight in critical condition.
The crash investigation has been turned over to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Sturgis Fire Department, Sturgis Ambulance, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sturgis Police Department.
