Rapid City Announces Holiday Schedule Changes for New Year’s Day

RAPID CITY, S.D. – City officials in Rapid City are adjusting schedules and operations for several municipal services in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.

City offices will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1. Despite the holiday closures, the Public Works Committee meeting will proceed as scheduled at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the Legal and Finance Committee meeting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rapid City Landfill and Solid Waste Division have announced specific adjustments to trash collection. The landfill will be closed Thursday. Residents with trash collection normally scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday should place their bins out one day earlier than usual and leave them until collected. Monday and Friday collections will remain on their normal schedule.

Public facilities across Rapid City, South Dakota, will see varying hours. The Rapid City Library will close at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and remain closed on New Year’s Day. The Monument and the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena will also be closed on the holiday, with the ice arena ending operations by 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

The Roosevelt Park Swim Center is currently hosting School’s Out Open Swim through Jan. 2, with sessions beginning at noon. The center will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and remain closed Thursday before resuming normal hours Friday.

Rapid Transit Services, including RapidRide and Dial-A-Ride, will suspend all operations on New Year’s Day, returning to service on Friday.

While administrative offices for the Streets Department and Rapid City Regional Airport will be closed Thursday, essential operations continue. Street crews remain on call for snow events, and the airport will remain open for flights. Travelers are encouraged to verify flight statuses directly with airlines.

Emergency services through the Rapid City Fire Department and Rapid City Police Department will maintain regular shift schedules, though their respective administrative offices will be closed on the holiday.
