UPDATE – Police Investigate Shooting Near West Main Street

6:15pm – UPDATE from the RCPD – The juvenile suspect identified in the ongoing investigation into the shooting has been located and taken into to custody by law enforcement. He will be placed in the appropriate channels of the juvenile justice system.


8:45am – RAPID CITY, S.D. – A shooting incident late Saturday night near Main St and Jackson Blvd that left one person with life-threatening injuries has been reclassified as a homicide after the victim died at the hospital, police reported.

The victim succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident in the 1800 block of West Main Street. The individual’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.


Rapid City Police Department detectives and investigators have worked through the night to determine what occurred and what led up to the homicide. Preliminary findings, based on witness information and video evidence, suggest the shooting was the result of an altercation between two groups or people in the 1800 block of West Main St.

The investigation is ongoing; however, police have identified the juvenile believed to be responsible for the shooting and are currently seeking his whereabouts.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities in Rapid City, South Dakota, are investigating a shooting incident that left one person with life-threatening injuries late Saturday night.

Officers with the Rapid City Police Department responded to the area of West Main Street and Jackson Boulevard at approximately 9:33 p.m. on Dec. 13 following a report that an individual had been shot. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement located the victim.

The individual was transported to a hospital by ambulance with injuries described by police as serious and life-threatening.

While the investigation is in its early stages, authorities stated that based on preliminary information, they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety. Detectives from the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office are currently conducting a joint investigation into the incident.

Police officials indicated that additional updates regarding the shooting will be provided as the investigation progresses.
