RAPID CITY, SD — Today, a Pennington County jury found Walter Mousseau Jr., 30, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Sheldon Glenn.

On July 4, 2022, Mousseau drowned Glenn in the Memorial Park pond in broad daylight, as people gathered nearby for Independence Day activities and a community concert at the bandshell.

This case now proceeds to the second phase of the trial. Because Mousseau entered a plea of guilty by reason of insanity, the same jury will reconvene to determine whether Mousseau was legally insane at the time the crime was committed. The State will argue that Mousseau was sane at the time of the offense.

The insanity phase of the trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday.

This case was tried on behalf of the State by Assistant Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Jason Thomas, Senior Deputy State’s Attorney Braedon Houdek, Deputy State’s Attorney Emily Toms, and Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Gina Nelson.
