Donald Dean Dubbe

Donald Dean Dubbe was born February 25, 1926 to Emil and Dora Dubbe in Humboldt, South Dakota. He passed away January 23, 2026, 99 years and 11 months old.

Don spent his active childhood in Humboldt. After his graduation from Humboldt High School, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He participated in the Battle of Luzon, which liberated the Philippines from Japan. He received numerous medals for his service. Don, a member of the American Legion, was always extremely proud of being a United States Army veteran.

Upon returning to the United States after the war, he enrolled at South Dakota State College, earning a degree in biology and education. He remained a proud Jackrabbit for the rest of his life.

Don began his teaching career in numerous small towns in eastern South Dakota. He and Norma Hartman married May 31, 1953. They welcomed Cindy, their only child, to their family on March 5, 1955.

The family moved to Sturgis in 1957. Don taught biology at Sturgis High School until his retirement in May of 1986. In addition to teaching, he was the yearbook advisor, ran the scoreboard for football games, and also worked at the scorer’s table for basketball games and wrestling matches. Don and Norma were very active in Sturgis High School activities because they believed that getting to know their students on many levels was an essential part of being educators. Don was inducted into the Sturgis Brown High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021 for his contributions.

After retiring from teaching, Don worked for Bub’s Golf Cars as a cart mechanic. He loved traveling to area golf courses and keeping their carts in good running order. Don also was able to enjoy his favorite hobby of golf with his friends Barry, Leo, Don W., and Duane on an almost daily basis. He especially loved golfing in scrambles with his son-in-law and grandsons.

Don’s other hobby was taking care of his yard and garden. He could often be seen mowing and doing work well into his 90s.

After Norma’s death in 1998, Don began playing bridge with long-time friend Laverne Elliott. A great friendship bloomed from those bridge games. Don and Laverne spent many hours together dining out, attending civic events, and driving through the Black Hills.

Don truly epitomizes a life well-lived.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma, special friend Laverne, nine siblings, and many close friends.

Don is survived by his daughter Cindy (Joe) Shetler, grandson, Bill (Natalie), grandson Brad (Nicci), great grandsons Lucas, Bryson, and Tyler, great granddaughter Samantha, younger brother Robert (Nona), numerous nieces and nephews, and many life-long friends.

Memorials for Don may be directed to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Sturgis Kiwanis Food Pantry. Don was a Shriner’s Kid as a young boy, and he always had a special place in his heart for that care. Don was long-time member of the Golden K Kiwanis group, which manages the food pantry in Sturgis.

Ruth Lillian Paulson

Longtime Sturgis resident Ruth Lillian Paulson died on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Eureka, South Dakota, at 101 years old. She was born in Divide County, North Dakota, on October 10, 1924, to Adolph and Larsina Stene, who each immigrated to the United States from Norway with their families in 1900. Ruth was raised on a farm with her six siblings and attended school in Fortuna, ND.

In 1947, she married Maynard Paulson on her birthday, and they made their home in Fortuna. Here, they welcomed a daughter, Kerry, in 1949 and a son, Harvey, in 1951. Later that year, they moved their family to Minot, ND, where they lived until 1960. While living there, a daughter, Nancy, was born in 1955, completing their family.

In 1960, they made their final move to Sturgis, SD. When her three children were all in school, Ruth entered the world of working women. She worked as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Robert Wood, DDS, for about 15 years. She then worked at the  Elk Creek Conservation District for 11 years before retiring.

Ruth was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, participating in the Ladies Aid and Circle. She enjoyed helping with the Father/Son Banquet and serving breakfast in the Fellowship Hall to the bikers during the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally. But working with the Quilting ladies was what she enjoyed the most. One year, she gathered a number of old Rally t-shirts to make a quilt to be sold during the Rally. It was such a hit that they were taking orders for more! It eventually became a major fundraiser for the church!

Along with quilting, Ruth’s other talents included gardening and doing Jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid reader and made the best-ever Caramel Rolls!

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard; her sister, Borghild Bervig; her brothers, Adolph, Obert, Tonnes, Percy & Bruce Stene; and her grandson, Forrest Paulson.

Thomas Mitchell Blair

The angels have finally come, given our blessed friend his wings, and allowed him to pass into the Kingdom of God. Thomas Mitchell Blair passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, January 25, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Home in New Underwood, South Dakota.

Tom was a faithful friend, mentor, caregiver, pioneer, soldier, statesman, businessman, and advocate — but most of all, a beloved husband and devoted father.

He was born to Lyle Blair and Dawn (Darlington) Blair on January 8, 1945, a date he proudly shared with the King himself, Elvis Presley. He grew up as a typical South Dakota boy, learning to hunt and fish while working in his father’s service station. He played every sport available in the small town of Groton, proudly representing the Tigers.

Tom graduated from high school in 1963, studied at Presentation College earning his nursing degree, and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served nearly 12 years, achieving the rank of Captain in the Army Medical Corps, with deployment overseas during the Vietnam War.

In 1965, Tom met the love of his life, Linda Hanson, and they were married the following year. Tom and Linda’s life together included many moves, including Oklahoma, Washington, Texas, Washington, D.C., Kansas, and Alaska. In 1978, they settled in Deadwood, where Tom worked as a nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Together, they raised four children: Roberta, Christopher, Matthew, and Chad.

One of Tom’s greatest accomplishments, alongside Linda, was helping transform Deadwood through the Deadwood — You Bet Committee, ushering in a new era of prosperity with the establishment of gaming in the historic Old West town.

Tom was well known for his Irish gift of gab and natural leadership, which led him into a life of public service — first as a city councilman and later as Mayor of Deadwood. He was also actively involved in Deadwood Historic Preservation, the Lead-Deadwood School Board, the Black Hills Forest Advisory Board, the Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department, the Elks Club, among others.

After leaving medicine, Tom became a successful businessman in the gaming and tourism industries. He dedicated the next 30 years of his life to civic and school organizations, youth sports programs, and building the community he called home. He also never lost his love for hunting, fishing, and, most proudly, being “Poppa.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Dawn. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his children Roberta (Bryan) Arsaga, Christopher (Kim) Blair, Matthew (Sarah) Blair, and Chad (Christine) Blair; grandchildren Kyle, Kolbey, Kayle, Shawn, Ryan, Madeleine, Alexander, Ascher, and Ainsley; and great-grandchildren Landon, Kennedi, Blayke, Chase, Everleigh and Callan. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathy Rosengren and Patsy McCullough.

Now at peace, as he ascends into heaven, Tom may pass one final time by the Burn, watch the sunset, and head to the great Deer Camp in the sky.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Tom’s name to Northern Hills youth activity organizations.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood on Friday, February 20 at 10a.m. Tom will be laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery following the service. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held this summer, with details to be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com

Leonard Joseph Bettelyoun

Leonard Joseph Bettelyoun, known to many as “Joe,” was born on December 1, 1967, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, and passed away on January 31, 2026, in Spearfish, South Dakota, surrounded by loved ones.

Joe fought cancer courageously for five years, meeting each day with strength, grit, and a quiet determination that inspired all who knew him.

Joe was a simple man, proud of it. His loyalty to family, friends, and work never wavered, and he was a gentleman to a fault—steady, dependable, and kind in ways that never sought the spotlight.

He achieved much in his life, excelling as a star athlete in high school and college, where track and field was his specialty and he soared as a 7-foot high jumper, earning awards, trophies, and records that reflected his dedication and competitive spirit.

Joe was also dedicated to his work, spending 33 years with Donovan Construction, where he built more than structures—he built respect, friendships, and a legacy of hard work and integrity.

As an adult, Joe’s true love was adventure. He spent his time hunting, fishing, and camping, making lifelong friends from Wyoming to Madison, South Dakota, and everywhere in between. He loved a big campfire, the outdoors, and making sure everyone felt cared for—often with a Coors Light in hand, breakfast sizzling on the griddle, and a colored light glowing nearby. And if there was a campfire, you could bet Johnny Cash was playing, because nothing paired with his fire better than those tunes.

Joe was a man who never sat, always standing with a Coors Light in hand. He blamed it on being the youngest and only boy of four sisters, only six chairs in the house, and always left standing. A true gentleman, he carried that humor and generosity throughout his life, always making sure everyone got a seat at the campfire before he did.

Joe had been a bachelor all of his life, and when anyone asked if he’d ever get married, he’d grin and say, “When hell freezes over.” That moment came in 2009, when he reconnected with Teresa. Together they built a life full of love and laughter, eventually marrying and making Joe a devoted husband, dad, and papa.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; his bonus children, Sydney, Danny, and Alexandria; his grandchildren, Sawyer, Chloe, and a granddaughter due in July 2026; his mother, Maxine; his sisters, Cindy (Kenny), Chris (Tim), Kim, and Linda; and his very special bond with his uncle Jr, aunt Shawnna, cousin Chad Sr, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Buzz” Bettelyoun; his mother, Ida Merrill; his niece, Alicia Madsen Albers; and his great-nephew, Jasiha Fisher.

A huge thank-you goes to all of Joe’s doctors, surgeons, nurses, infusion nurses, front desk staff, Monument Health, Mayo Clinic, and hospice. Each of you took such special care of him, right to the very end, focusing on comfort, love, and dignity—not a cure.

Joe was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. His warmth, loyalty, adventurous spirit, and the light he brought to every gathering—whether by a campfire, a breakfast skillet, or a colored light—will live on in the hearts of all who knew him… and somewhere, he’s already lighting the biggest campfire, pouring a Coors Light, cranking Johnny Cash, and making sure everyone has a colored light of their own.

How we will miss you, Joe.

We will celebrate his life on Saturday, February 7th, at the Joy Center at Black Hills State University, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

Cremation arrangements were under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Isburg Crematory of Spearfish. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com
