RAPID CITY, SD – Black Hills Life Flight has upgraded its air medical service in Rapid City with the addition of a PC-12/47 NG fixed wing aircraft. The new plane will be used to transport patients over long distances for specialized medical care and provide service when weather conditions prevent helicopters from flying.

The PC-12 is recognized for its ability to operate on short runways, high cruise speeds, and fuel efficiency. Black Hills Life Flight Lead Pilot Charles Laws said the aircraft is well suited for emergency medical services due to its large rear cargo door.

Technical upgrades to the aircraft include modern avionics, a quiet five-blade propeller, and an upgraded engine that improves climb rates. The aircraft also features a higher weight capacity, allowing the crew to transport additional fuel, medical equipment, or a family member alongside the patient.

The aircraft functions as a mobile intensive care unit, serving neonatal, pediatric, obstetric, and adult patients. The team recently added a Zoll AutoPulse CPR device to its equipment, which allows for mechanical chest compressions during flight. The crew also carries whole blood to treat patients at risk of hemorrhagic shock.

Air Methods remains in-network with most health insurance providers. The company stated that patients do not need a membership to be transported and that a patient advocacy program is available to assist with the affordability of services regardless of insurance status.
