RAPID CITY, SD — Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun used this week’s “Meeting with the Mayor” on KKLS “The Cowboy” to touch on everything from Pierre politics to backyard hens.Salamun said he attended the pre-state of the state gathering in Pierre, calling it a chance to connect with lawmakers and leaders across South Dakota. He said one takeaway from Gov. Larry Rhoden’s address was an emphasis on “national security” as part of the state’s economic development strategy.

With Ellsworth Air Force Base and the B-21 mission, Salamun said national security-related work could expand in the region through partnerships and workforce development. He pointed to South Dakota Mines and Elevate, which he said purchased the former bank building across from the post office so the university can use the space for national security efforts.

Salamun also wrapped up a two-year term in Ellsworth’s Honorary Commander program and noted the community’s ties to the military, including a recent welcome home for South Dakota National Guard members returning from a 13-month deployment to the southern border.

Looking ahead to 2026, Salamun said Rapid City expects a major tourism year with America 250 celebrations and local milestones. He referenced Independence Day planning, including a drone show, and said the city is also marking 150 years since its founding, with a time capsule scheduled to be opened in 2026.

Closer to home, Salamun said the City Council is again weighing whether to allow backyard hens. “I would sign it if it had the right guardrails that protect neighboring properties,” he said, citing setbacks, cleanliness, and limits on the number of hens.
