RAPID CITY, SD — “It has been an honor to serve the residents of Ward 3 and Rapid City,” Maher said. “We are experiencing significant growth and opportunity, but also real challenges. I am running for re-election to continue providing steady leadership, fiscal responsibility, and practical solutions for our community.”

First elected in 2023, Maher has served as Council President and has focused on responsible budgeting, infrastructure planning, economic development, and public safety. Ward 3, which includes much of west Rapid City, continues to see growth that requires careful planning and strong financial oversight.

Maher has 37 years of leadership experience in banking and finance. He established and led the Synchrony Bank operations center in Rapid City, creating more than 450 local jobs. His professional background provides deep experience in financial management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership—skills he applies directly to city governance. A long-time community leader, Maher has served as Chairman of the Vision Fund Citizen’s Committee and as Honorary Commander of the 34th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base. He currently serves on the Military Affairs Executive Steering Committee. His past service includes Chairman of the Board of Junior Achievement of the Black Hills, 15 years as a classroom volunteer, President of the Rapid City Catholic School System, and board service with Elevate Rapid City, the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and the Rapid City Community Development Corporation. He currently serves on the board of TeamMates and as a mentor with Rapid City Area Schools.

“As Rapid City grows, we must maintain and modernize our infrastructure, strengthen public safety, prepare for the B-21 mission arriving at Ellsworth and ensure our city remains financially sound,” Maher said. “We also have an opportunity to build a stronger partnership with South Dakota Mines to drive innovation and workforce development. “My background in finance and community service prepares me to help guide our city through this next phase of growth.”

Maher grew up in Huron, earned his MBA from the University of South Dakota, began his career in Sioux Falls, and moved to Rapid City with his wife Denise in 1995. They raised their three children in Rapid City and remain deeply invested in the community. “I believe in thoughtful growth, strong neighborhoods, and keeping Rapid City a place families are proud to call home. I would be honored to continue serving Ward 3.”
