RAPID CITY, SD — Today, 50-year-old Daniel Koble was sentenced to 25 years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary for third-degree rape stemming from repeated sexual assaults over a period of several years.
The offenses occurred between 2020 and 2023. Koble pled guilty to the charge in August 2025.
At sentencing, Assistant Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Jason Thomas argued for the statutory maximum, emphasizing that Koble’s conduct was not an isolated lapse in judgment but a sustained pattern of abuse.
“These were not one-time mistakes,” Thomas told the court. “Each count represents a separate decision, a separate violation, and a separate harm. Taken together, they reflect a prolonged course of conduct that caused lasting damage.”
Thomas further emphasized the danger posed by the defendant, stating, “The defendant has demonstrated through his actions that he cannot be trusted with authority over others or with the freedoms of the community.”
In a victim impact statement, the victim described the lasting trauma caused by the abuse, including feelings of isolation, loss of trust, and emotional harm. She concluded by reclaiming her voice and strength.
“I refuse to stay quiet any longer. This is for me. I will not be silenced,” she said.
The defense requested a probationary sentence. Seventh Circuit Judge Jeffrey Connolly rejected that request, stating that the seriousness of the offense warranted a lengthy penitentiary sentence.
Judge Connolly sentenced Koble to the statutory maximum of 25 years, with three years suspended. Upon release, Koble will remain under supervision on parole.
This case was prosecuted on behalf of the State by Assistant Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Jason Thomas.
