
RAPID CITY, S.D. – High winds have left thousands of residents without power in and around the Rapid City area.
According to Black Hills Energy at least 16,000 customers are currently affected.
“The high winds are causing many outages across our service territory. Our crews are responding to emergency situations and will continue restoration as soon as it’s safe to do so,” Black Hills Energy’s social media post reads.
Power outages extend north out of Rapid City to the Black Hawk, Piedmont and Summerset area. There are also power outages being reported in the northern hills west and south of Lead and Deadwood and on Terry Peak. So far, Sturgis has not reported any outages, although there is some wind damage being reported around town, including a large tree that was blown down and blocked the the road on Boulevard.
In Rapid City, officials with the Rapid City Streets Division indicate crews report there is a tower down on the top of Tower Road at Skyline Drive. Police have the road shut down.
There is a sign down and in the road at Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph Street. and social media pictures show a sign down on top of vehicles at Liberty Motors. Debris and small signs are down throughout town.
Rapid City Crews from the Streets Division are working on clearing debris issues.
Drivers advised to use caution this morning due to the road debris hazards.
